Its taken me 1 year and several months and tons of money, xrays, injections, tears and many many prayers and finally may have reason my colt quit working his left turns. Finally xrayed his feet and the left hind has a negative palmar angle. So my question is what kind of shoes and treatment did you use and what type of shoes?

My mare had negative palmar angles in the front feet. I spent a long time messing with farriers and treatments, here's what finally worked for us;

First, I had to find a farrier that knew more than the one I had. Get one that's good at corrective shoeing.

Then we did;
Egg bars, with a pad.
Transitioned to a wedge pad and regular shoe.

In conjunction with IRAP injections, once a week until sound, and then as needed.

Also I had her on a good joint supplement and hoof supplement to promote hoof growth.

Once I transitioned to a better farrier and vet, it took about a year before my mare was 100% sound. In about 6 months, she was 95%.

How long was she in egg bars? And did you have her xrayed before going to the wedges? Also what degree was her negative angle? Thanks for the reply.

She was in the eggbars for 5 months with the crappy farrier, and then only in the egg bars I think for 4 months with the good farrier. If I would have used my current farrier, I think it would have been the 4 month span.

Her front feet were almost pointed straight down. :(

I had her xrayed twice, once by the first vet, and five months later when I threw in the towel on both the farrer and vet and moved on to what I have now. We then xrayed her again.

But befoe I made any changes either time, I had my vet and farrier look her over.

No problem. This was probably the most stressful injury I had to deal with, so I totally feel your pain!

So just wht is negative palmar angle?

The back of the coffin bone is lower than the front. Usually caused by poor shoeing and low heels. Depending on how severe the angle is negative determines whether or not the foot can be saved.

Shoot, I sure wish I had the vet background to have retained all the info I got when the Boy had the very same issue that lead to him ducking.  I spent soooo much money and time trying to fix so many different possibilities, and those back feet xrays were just a lark, a last ditch look.

I know we did some special trims and set the shoes on differently.  If you are really wanting the info pm me and I'll call my vet tomorrow and see if I can get the records to me.
