| The white part of one of my geldings eyes had tuned brown/dark. His other is normal (white). What could cause this? I was told possibly allergies. I thought that maybe he did something to it to irritate it but it's has been about 3 weeks now since I first noticed it and it doesnt not look any better to me. He can see out of it. There is no discharge, etc.
Any ideas of what could have or be causing this and what I could do to treat it?
Edited to add - the Sclera is the part of the eye that I am reffering to. Could this be a result of his color? Can this part of the eye turn brown/dark with age? He is a buckskin, turned 11 this year.
Thank you!!

Thanks! I tried looking some things up and could not really find anything on it. I would say it has probably been this way a bit longer than the 3 weeks, itβs possible that thatβs just when I realized it. I also noticed that his 'third eyelid' looks to be maybe a bit inflamed/puffy. |

Location: Idahome | In need of a possible liver cleanse? Not real sure, but you could find someone that specializes in Iridology. http://www.equineiridology.eu/iridology.php

Location: North Dakota | I personally do not believe in iridology ... for horses or humans. I think it's baloney, personally. The story behind the founding father of iridology happened when a man's son fell out of the tree. The man rushed over to his son to see if he was okay, and as he was looking at his son, he saw a speck appear in his iris of his eye. He claimed that because his son just had this traumatic incident, he was able to "see it" by the speck of color that changed on the iris. The thought is that the iris will "change" based on what is going on with the body and/or the experiences the person/animal has had.
Anywho, as far as the original question, I am guessing this might have been something that has been there all along and you've just finally noticed it.
It's not uncommon for humans, or animals, to have pigmentation in the sclera (humans we typically refer to the conjunctiva because that is the visible "white"' of the human eye). In humans, typically African Americans or those with darker pigmented skin will have this. Most of the time, it is nothing more than pigmentation. But it is possible that it can be cancer, in some cases. I'm obviously not a vet, but I would assume that darker colored horses would be more prone to having scleral pigmentation.

So just keep an eye on it (no pun intended). Take a photo, if you can, to better document. Watch and see if it changes, or if it stays the same. If it is truly new and changing, I'd certainly have a good equine vet examine it just in case it would be some form of melanoma (which is usually pigmented).

| Thank you all! I have looked at some older photos of him and noticed that there is visible 'white' in the eye that I am reffering to, where as now there doesnt seem to be. I am going to take some pictures and post them later, just to give a better idea of what I am seeing. I am hoping this may just be something that 'happens'.
Thanks again! |

| Β Jaundice can be yellow to brown (severe) but would be in both eyes, does the eye have a film like uveitis? Lepto eyes are dark but have uveitis as well.
