Where I train, the ground is not tilled. The ground between barrels is basically regular hard ground and around the barrels is deeper, softer, torn up ground. It does get sticky when it rains.I know different horses prefer different grounds but is racing on regular hard ground or tore up dirt safer? What do you prefer?

Running barrels on HARD ground is not a good idea. Good way to lame a horse if you do it on a consistent basis.
However, you also don't want the ground TOO deep. But it does need to be dug up for you horse to get some cushion and footing around the barrels.

I will not run on hard ground or ground that is too deep. Ran once in a really deep sandy pen and horse almost went down. I do not rodeo and am surrounded by jackpots every weekend year round and can be picky where I go. I do this for fun and getting me or my horse hurt is not fun.

Around my barrels the ground isn't all that deep. The dirt is a deeper clay and sand mixture in the arena I usually run at, and my horses usually run well there. Thanks for the answers. I just didn't know if deeper ground was good or bad for barrels.
