Hello everyone!  I need some advice and suggestions about what to do/ what you think may be going on with my mare M.J.

Recently she has been lame on her right hind end. A different vet came than my normal one came out to do vaccines and noticed her off. He did a flex test and she didn't get worse.  He then proceeded to do a test where he tapped her along her neck and back( forgot what this was called)  she had a spot where there was no reaction on her lower neck on the left hand side. Because of this he said she might be sore in the neck and wants to do xrays and also get opinion of other vets first that will be out tomorrow.

The owner of the barn i board at, also brought up the possibilty of Epm. Saying it might explain why she doesn't keep muscle tone or weight as well as a 10 year old horse should ( I'll try and post recent pictures of her) I haven't worked her in a few weeks since she's been sore.

A little background. She has been a barrel horse before i got her and now we only barrel race for fun occasionally ( when she is not sore or lame) A year after i got her, she ended up colicing and having a seizure due to a shot mishap. Since then she's always seemed a little off when she moves (but will always do what you ask of her wether she is or not) And has been lame on and off. We had a chiro come out after she seizured because her back was sore and looked out of line. He told us I was lucky she hadnt fractured her hip. ( as he said) My normal vet recommended Pentosan, so I put her on that for about a year seemed to help her alot!  We took her off and she did fine.

Since she has recently been sore, i've given her time off. But she'll still go run around in the pastures. She's had some stall rest. She hasn't gotten much better. It's been cooler here also. Nothing under 30's though. I'm just wondering, could it be a possibilty of epm? Maybe arthritis?  Is it nessiceraly(sp?) a bad thing if she has a spot that doesnt have reaction on her neck?  Should we consider the xrays in her neck?  Just looking for second opinions and options. Everyone seems to have their own opinions which can make it hard but also appreciated. The vet who did her vaccines has been pushing the xrays. Which i want the best for my horse just want to cover all my options before proceeding to get xrays.

Thanks in advance! I hope this is not confusing.

It sounds like the neck X rays are meant to diagnose wobblers or EPM...he's looking for signs of arthritis or compression in the spinal cord....you should probably rule that out by letting him do the X rays....I know there are further way to test EPM, and someone else here might know more about them...I've never had to deal with that...good luck!
