Location: Oklahoma | Has anyone ever done it? Is it hard? I know it will be time consuming, but I think it would kinda be a fun nighttime project. I would like to start out on just some cheap floral tooled spur straps.
I'd assume I'd need really precise paintbrushes, but would it require a special kind of paint or pre-painting base/treatment?
I'm not at all artsy, so I'm sure I'm way over my head!! Any input or suggestions is welcomed!! |

Tandy Leather has good paint! |

| My daughter paints a lot and likes turtle feather paint. Just make sure your leather is clean and wax free if you can. She buys some stuff tooled, does a little of her own tooling and if you can find someone to make some that is unfinished it works really well. Have fun ! |

| I used plain acrylic paint fron Joann's and it has held up very well! I also used a sealer and a water protective coating on top.

Thank you! I was very nervous about messing up but it was worth it! I'd love to do another set. |

| Angelus paint seems to work the best, it's for leather and it seems to be a little more flexible. I've found the regular acrylic paint works well if you water it down a little bit, if it's too thick it cracks easily. |

Location: Oklahoma | Thanks guys! I'll definitely be heading to Joann's/Hobby Lobby this weekend and checking out paints!
Canchaser, may I ask how long it took a paint something small like the spur straps? & may I ask where you bought your BC tack at? My main saddle is a BC and I'd love to be able to find the breast collar that matches my tooling perfectly! |

I could probably do both of the spur straps in about 3 hours. I painted the green on each piece first, then the orange, then the brown last. I let each color dry before starting the next.
I bought the BC breastcollar on Ebay and I think I traded some tack for the headstall. I really want to get my hands on the browband headstall that matches the breastcollar. |
