Location: Kentucky | I am writing an explication paper, and I have choosen the word "Pink Ghetto". This is based on women's work field usually paying less. They are high stress, low paying jobs. I'm having a hard time picking the primative and the derived terms. Can anyone help? Thanks! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I can probably help. Be a little more specific about what you are thinking in terms of 'primitive' and 'derived'? Are you talking grammatically or more linguistically? Or is this communications theory? |

I believe it is Comm Theory. Primative being words that are "known" or "common knowledge". Derivative meaning that I need to define it more. I'm assuming "Ghetto" would need to be defined more, as that word has changed a lot over the years.
For instance, a example draft we have has a gal explicating "Sexting". Her primative term is sex. Derivative terms are "sexually explicit", "text message" and "pornography". |

Okay, that makes sense. Yes I would agree. Though it may work in reverse in the sense that the 'derivative' is not what is derived from Ghetto but what words the word 'ghetto' was originally defined from, based on the example you give of your friends.
Here's the definition and etymology from Merriam Webster; it was used originally as a word to define a 'bad' neighborhood where Jews lived during the Renaissance 1ghet·tonoun \'ge-(?)to\: a part of a city in which members of a particular group or race live usually in poor conditions : the poorest part of a city plural ghettos also ghettoes 1 : a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to live 2 : a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure 3 a : an isolated group <a geriatric ghetto> b : a situation that resembles a ghetto especially in conferring inferior status or limiting opportunity <the pink-collar ghetto> Examples of GHETTO - He grew up in the ghetto.
Origin of GHETTOItalian, from Venetian dialect ghèto island where Jews were forced to live, literally, foundry (located on the island), from ghetàr to cast, from Latin jactare to throwFirst Known Use: 1611 Looks like, in relation to the Latin, it has a lot in common with 'jet' to throw or 'eject' to throw out.
As for the primative, are you sure that's the correct spelling? It should be pull something up on that for communications? Based on your definition, though you seem to be right on track with the ideas that a 'pink ghetto' is obviously an abstract identifier for the lower wages that women make. If you were looking at the derivatives for pink you would be pointing mainly to cultural color identifiers, such as is commonly used for breast cancer now. I don't know that you have as many 'word' derivatives there as you would cultural examples. Might be interesting to see when the color was first associated with women (besides the lips as red as a rose); I know in the Middle Ages, men are often portrayed wearing the color. This may have some sexual reference too as certain parts of the female body are 'more' that color.
