I have a 4yo mare that is staying very sore in her lower back right in front of her hips, I took her to the Vet last Saturday and had her checked out, I had sent the mare to a Professional Trainer for 30 days to be rode and when I got her back she had a very bad case of Rain Rot. So it took 2 rounds of Antibiotic Shots to heal it. ok So after all the symptoms of the rain rot was gone she was staying sore to the touch right across the hip area, My vet said that the Nerve Endings hasn't healed and that is why she's sore and to use Preparation H on the hip area and that should heal the nerve endings... I have been doing so for the 3 days and no change at all... Has anyone ever heard of Rain Rot causing this after its been gone for 3-4 months ?? |

Location: Canada | We have one that is prone to rain rot as soon as it gets cold. He has never been sore after I've cleared it up. I think you may need a second opinion from a different vet.
Good luck |

| I'd be more inclinced to think an illfitting sadddle made your horse sore. |

| I have never seen a horse sore from rain rot and I do therapy work. I would think its issue is stemming from something else. I would definitely get a second opinion. Keep us posted. |

| Ok thanks Girls !! I am waiting on the Chiro to get back with me so I can run her down there !! The Vet I used said that her hocks were stiff in the flex test and for me to inject her, but I didnt know if that was wise with her only being a 4 year old and shes never been hammered on.. |

I would have gotten X-rays of the hocks, and yes they could be sore even at 4 depends on the type of ground they worked her in, if they were asking her to stop on hard ground this can exacerbate inflammation and arthritis in the hocks.
Also horses with poor feed, mineral growing up can also be predisposed to early on site arthritis, or bony deformities, also if this horse was cow hocked at birth and had corrective shoeing/trimming as a baby this could be a predisposition as well.
Yes hock problems can cause problems higher up, stifle, tilted pelvis, back pain. |

1. hock pain will lead to back pain
2. you need xrays of the hocks. She could have juvelile OCD- if that is the case you will need to do something about it...it's not from "hammering" |
