| When I try to ride my 13 yr old mare I have problems trying to get on her. She wont stand for me to get on her. She use to be fine with me getting on her til about two years ago. I have a bad knee and it's very hard on me now to try to get on while shes walking away. Any advice |

Location: mi | If she is just being a Pita because she can.. then I would make it more pleasant for her to stand then it is to walk away. I make sure to have a nice long set of split reins on and when they walk away we proceed to be lunged in some nice little tight circles for a minute and then asked to stand and let me mount again. If they move again off we go.... and so on until they realize its better to just stand and let me on verses working . |

Location: Texas | It may be the way your getting on. If you have a bad knee maybe your getting on diffrent than you used to ex: hanging longer or poking your toe in her. If not then have someone get on and off of her til she learns to stand agin. A lot of times if you can keep their head turned towards you and keep your foot in the stirrup that'll keep them in a tight circle and most will stop then you can step on, sit for a little bit then step off and go at it agin til she stands then reward her. |

Trot her around you for a bit and then give her the chance to learn from her mistake. Everytime she walks away, make it hard for her. Even if you get her to the piont where she walkes only two steps, that is two too many. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I'd also look at your body language when you get on. Sometimes it can also be a case of being tense when you get on and you're cueing the horse to go forward without even realizing it. Also get in the habit of sitting still for a couple of seconds when you get on. Horses learn by repetition and sometimes they'll start walking off because we start off first thing.
A couple of other things I'll do is I'll step up and down several times before I get on, and I'll also back them a couple of steps.
Also look at saddle fit. |

| Grab the horn, and shake her front feet out before you get on. When you do get on back up two or three steps everytime. |

| I have a two year old that is going to the trainer in a month. One thing that I always ask the trainer to do is to teach them to turn their head to the left when mounting. I ALWAYS shorten my left rein and pull the head toward my leg as I mount. I learned this when I had a BAD son of a gun that would hurt you when he got the chance. This was years ago and I got rid of that horse fast. My horses are very gentle but I still snug up that left rein when I get on. |

Location: on a hill | Try a mounting block. If she stands for you with it, your probably pulling on her back causing pain. My 1 gelding is 16h and I am 5'3 he will not stand for me to climb on but will for the block. I know I was pulling on his withers, he was out there every time the chiro came. Since the block he's all good in the withers. |

I use a mounting block too. All of my horses are large 15-3, 16-1 and I am old. I have one that is 15-1 and I can actually get one her from the ground. I went to Lowe's and got a two step stool for about $14. |
