So today I noticed that my horse has an abscessed sub mandiular lymph node.

Which I know to everyone probably screams strangles....so here is my thought process and maybe others can provide insight as well.

My horse has no fever,  no runny nose, and no loss of appetite. My horse has not been in direct contact with anything that has strangles. My other horses (one being just three) who are stalled with him have and show no signs of sickness either. All of my horses can have direct contact with each other.

About a year ago I had a "tooth" issue and took my horse to a hospital, ended up just using antibiotics and everything cleared up. I have had no issues since. The tooth was the first molar on top (right side), horse had drainage out of the right nostril. My horse was scoped, x-rayed, everything, and the vets got in a huge debate on what to do and contacted a specialist in Kansas even. Ended up saying to just go with antibiotics. Since it was the first top molar I don't feel like it would be the root cause of this abscess.
As of now his breath doesn't stink-and there is no drainage. This makes me think it is not a tooth issue.

The only thing I have done differently is start my horse on Silver Lining Herbs four days ago. I did some research, and although there is not a lot out there, I have found some research that suggests that allergies can cause an
abscessed sub mandiular lymph node.

So I stopped the supplement....put Betadine on it, and have been monitoring his temperature. I talked to my vet....said I would have him out if he goes off of feed, if my other horses show signs of sickness, or if he gets a temperature.

Could this be the result of my tooth issue last year, even though it was a top tooth and he has no smelly breath (like he did a year ago)?

Or any ideas on what it could be? Or is it realistic to say that he may just be allergic to whatever is in the herbs? That stuff is very potent and strong smelling!

I bought a three year old mare one time that was swollen like that would let me touch put here on antibodics and it went down a little and washed it with betadine until i could get it open and a chunch of wood came out. Most likely a spinter off a fence.

I had a horse that rotated his coffin bone and I put him on SLH  a couple days after I put him on it he had a terrible reaction on the leg that had the coffin bone rotated. It was almost a rash it was disgusting I freaked out called the distributor and they said it was normal. I've seen horses get strangles (never separated, drank from the same water) and it never was passed on. It was only one horse that had it and it never went on to another horse. I've had a personal horse get it years ago and was probably a 1/2 mile away from any new sale horses that came in and he never showed any signs of feeling sick no runny nose, no cough, good appetite, drank normal etc.. I don't think it affects every horse like everyone thinks it does.

Strangles comes in a lot of different mutations these days due to people using antibiotics when that is the last thing you want to do because it will drive it internally and you will end up with bastard strangles.

The strangles germ lives in soil and inside barns for years or a horse in a trailer going down the highway can cough and the wind carry it over to your trailer even if you are going the other direction ... lol

Keep it washed out and use something greasy on it to keep it open and draining ... I use furazone or Vaseline ...... and see if it is healed up in 2+ weeks.

Strangles is one of those diseases horses have to have to get immunity to it .... the strangles vaccine mfgr only states ....>>" It may reduce the affects of the disease but offers no immunity" ........ I do not give these types of maybeso vaccines ....

Your tooth problem could have reoccurred ... so wait the 2+ weeks on the strangles issue ... and then doctor for the tooth again since you already know what to do to fix it ....

GOOD LUCK ..

Just a little update...

It is already looking better.

So I am thinking one of two things:

Allergic reaction to those herbs or debris from a splinter or some type of foreign body getting in his chin.

Today it is much less inflammed and he even is letting me doctor it without trying to get away from me.

He almost acts like it feels good when I clean it out.

Still no temperature and all my other horses are fine too.

Thanks for all the insight! I am feeling better about the situation.

Just as above person stated strangles bacteria lives a good while, is present just about wherever a horse has been, can be carried to your place on your's or other's boots, clothes, tack, etc. I would think if it had been caused from the original tooth abscess there would have been fever at some point.
