Location: KS | Yes , but I was a terrible header! Got mad one day and backed in the heel box, hubby said "what are you doing?" I told him I wasn't getting anything done on the head side so What the heck? Two-footed 5 in a row and never went back to the head side. Evidently I have a natural heel swing. |

| Yes, That is proof that luck is better then talent! (what is your name?) Actually when I started roping (2nd grade 1969) I was heeling off of my pony. When I went to a taller horse I couldn't get the throwing down thing and refused to let rope slide thru my hand. Have been heading every since out growing that pony. |

Location: Roping pen | IMO, it is not that hard if you have decent horsemanship and rope handling skills. If not, might want to stay on one end but, hey, if you are like me, you are in it for the fun, so why not...
I would advise, during the switch, that you pick out just ONE thing to work on per month. And the most important, IMO, on the heeling side, is horse position. Heading, most can overcome poor horse position, but heeling, is makes that job much, much more difficult if your horse will not run to that "spot" every time.
Dallying is another issue or if you tie on, that can create it's own problems.
My spouse switched a year ago to heeling after heading for 20 years. Mainly due to the barrier issue....she won her first roping and is getting pretty tough to beat. Enjoys it much more!
Good luck and have fun!

Location: Arkansas | I prefer to head, but rope both ends due to the fact that hubby also prefers to head, so when we practice we have to heel for each other. The plus to heading is that you always get to throw your rope I have never tied on heeling--I know a lot of girls who heel do, but I'm a whole lot more comfortable dallying and knowing I can turn things loose if we get in a storm. |
