I have a 28 year old mare that is just a retired pasture ornament.  She had her last foal in 2005 at the age of 19.  For the past several years she had an ugly/cushing's coat in the winter, but would always shed off slick for the summer time.  Last spring she started to shed normally, but then the shedding came to a stop and she started growing hair in June that makes her look like she's wearing a shag carpet.  She has chronic uveitis in one eye and has had to have a few teeth pulled.  She is not lame and is currently on a grass hay diet with no grain.  This winter she also started getting diarrhea.  She is not stalled so I have not been able to check her input and output of water.

I have read old archives on supplements for cushings, and I am going to try the Chaste Berry supplement.  However, what type of feed would be best for her in addition to her grass hay and pasture?

Senior feed.  You can wet it down to make it easier to eat, and you won't have to worry about extra sugars like a sweet feed.
I'd try Remission by AniMed.  We had a cushings mare that did great on it.

You want a feed with low NSC (nonstructural carbohydrates which is sugar + starch).  We have a pony that has cushings, a little over a year ago we switched him over to Essential K by Tribute, which is a ration balancer feed and with one pound of that feed a day he gets all the nutrients he needs and its very low in NSC.  Tribute also makes Kalm N EZ which is another very low NSC feed, however with this pony he didn't necessarly need any weight he was already heavy enough, he just needed the nutrients he wasn't getting from just having his hay each day. We've maintained him well on this, and have been able to copletely take him off the other supplement we had him on trying to maintain the cushings.  Tribute may not be available where you are at, but there are other companies that make a low NSC feed.  Good Luck!

Any grain low in starch or a lite formula is best. Triple Crown makes a lite formula which is low in starch and fat which is even better. Also THE has a super effective Cushings Formula you should look into. Also very affordable

Contact Dr. Frank Reilly.  Equine Med Surg Associates in Pennsylvania.  He is an expert at Insulin Resistant Horses and Cushings Syndrome.  I had 2 lames horses (1/2 brothers) that are Insulin Resistant.  He has helped me immensely with these 2 horses over the phone.
