| I contacted cactus saddles in my saddle search to get their tree measurement a and I thought I would share the info.
6.5" gullet = 13.5" bar spread
6.75" gullet = 13.75" bar spread
7" gullet = 14" bar spread
So flatter than normal bars as some folks had mentioned. Off to the tack shop this afternoon to try some saddles! |

I love my CJ saddles. I have 2 saddles, both with 7" gullets. I ride horses with the same build so it seems to work well for me. |

| I'm excited to try one. I'm also trying an HR with the middle set of measurements that is more budget friendly...but I worked the CJ price into my budge as a worst case scenario too because I really prefer the way a 6.5" gullet sits on him. |

| Nope. Gullet is great. Bar spread is too narrow and pinching like a vice grip under my leg. |

| The bar spread isn't as important as the angle of the bars. |

| Agreed, but a wider spread should indicate a flatter angle based on the measuring points and tree diagrams I've seen in most cases and at least give us a starting point.

Location: Riding Crackhead. | My daughter has a Cactus Brandi Halls with FQHB. The bars are too straight and don't fit my horses like the CJ saddles. My daughter can use it on her running bred built mare but that's about it. Beautiful saddle though. |

You would think but that hasn't been my experience. |

| I've been in touch with both HR and Cactus and based on the description of the horse and the issues we're having, a tree with those spread measurements have been their recommendation as a starting point to try.
The shop has numerous other brands and options if they don't work out. I thought since Cactus has come up many times lately as a flatter bar people would be interested to know some more measurements on them since I wasn't able to find them published anywhere online and had to contact the directly.
I'll also have a saddle fitter with us at the shop, so I'm sure with our combined experience we'll do just fine and hopefully I'll be able to leave with a well fitting saddle tonight. |

I'm anxious to hear what you find out tonight. Hope you find a nice saddle that works for your horse without breaking the bank. |

I had a Cactus Brandie Halls barrel saddle too - did not fit my wide horse either. It sure was pretty though. |

Sadly my daughter is selling the only horse the saddle fits. Hopefully her next horse will have the same build or she's going to be pretty sad. |

| Well, my wallet is still hot to the touch and smoking a little.
I have also never been more grateful for my horse to get back on the trailer. It was very windy and our first warm day. I was NOT prepared for how busy the road the shop sits on is and he was a total fire breathing dragon. So he wasn't very cooperative.
Ended up with a Crown C. Very basic design so not terribly more than the Cactus CJ would have been.
We put 2 HR's, a Circle Y, an Alamo and the Martin on him. Sadly the only CJ they had was too small a seat for me. Anyway, the first 3 pinched up front like normal and/or popped up in the back.
We set the Martin on him and it's like they cast his back to make the tree. Fits very nicely. It's 7" gullet. We're playing around with finding the right padding combination, but it sits nice on him without a pad, so I'm sure we can find it. I rode in it last night when I got back and I like them better on the horse than I did on the stand for sure. Made a couple runs through the pattern and I have my pony back!
Now...if it doesn't snow we can go run Sunday... |

eta...just for my own curiosity because I've never tried one how do you think the Martin and the Cactus compare in fit to your horse? I ride the CJ with a 7" gullet and was just curious how it would compare to a Martin. Thanks.

| Couldn't tell ya, we didn't try the cactus on him because the Martin fit and my butt will go in but won't come out of a 13" seat lol. I could walk out with the Martin vs waiting on the cactus. Ain't nobody got time for that with bonus race under a month away (holy cheap bonus race is less than a month away! I'm winning a check there by the way, that is plan A right now to pay for this sucker...jk...not really...) |

LOL OK gotcha. Yep my plan is to win a check there too. A lot of dang money stuck into this race so if at least one of my 3 horses doesn't pull a decent check I'll have to come up with a get rich quick plan to enter more barrel races. |

I had my mare fit by Brian at Martin for an 8 1/2 gullet and now ride her in a CJ 7 in gullet. Let me see if I can find a pic I took of them both head on.
My my mare stopped in the middle of my run more than once in my Martin. And I switched to an old saddle (since I sold everything to pay for the Martin) right after and she clocked in the 1d again. More than once. |
