What would be nice incentives for you to breed to a race stallion? It's a partnership between stallion owner and mare owner. What could the stallion owner do to intice your interest in their stallion? Lower his fee? Suggestions appreciated. Also, race stallion, but a proven family for barrels too. Future Fortunes, obviously....what else?

I love when stallion owners offer considerations to proven mares, and to daughters of proven stallions. If a stallion can be enrolled in regional incentive programs as well, that might make locals more interested (along with the bigger name national incentive funds). I also love merchandise, and being able to represent the stallions I am breeding mares to, especially with hats and things of that nature.

I enjoy learning as much as I can about the stallions I am considering, and I have spent a lot of time watching videos, critiquing and comparing, so I love seeing lots of information out there about the stallions. If races have been filmed, paddock time, etc. I don’t have a Facebook, but I still go to the public pages of certain studs and stay up to date.

Hopefully that is helpful!

shipping to Canada,,,,,

I really like farm incentives, we pay this much / prizes to the highest earner each year, first futurity winner, qualify for rodeo finals, EXT. I actually consider farm incentives over big things like FF that I have to pay into and have less chances of winning (totally just my personal thoughts)

A contract that does not take a lawyer to read, just plain and simple. Going out of your way to please mare owners. Long story short....My vet received the requested shipment of cooled semen the NEXT day at 10 am. The shipment was immediately opened and when the vet checked it for quality etc. there was absolutely nothing in the shipment. We have all been called liars. Everything was someone's fault at this end. All it would have taken was another shipment when the mare was not bred. That is not really too much to ask. So as I said, pleasing your mare owners. Word gets around.

Marketability of foals is very important to me. And that means the stallion needs to be well-known in the barrel world. For example, there is a local stallion that is proven in jackpots, amateur rodeos, and pro rodeos, is also proven on the track and has performers in all of these areas. But they don't advertise and beyond the local crowd he isn't well-known. A different local stallion is advertised on the national level and is well-known in the barrel industry. It cost me $500 more to breed to the one that was advertised, but I could sell that baby as a weanling/yearling for a profit compared to the other stallion's foal that we sold at a big loss as an older broke horse.

Where I'm going with that is as a mare owner I'm looking at value of the offspring. It's always nice to get a hat or something, and certain incentives definitely help. But when it comes down to it, if I can't market the resulting foal, I'm not going to breed to your stallion.

And of course how you treat your mare owners. There are a few well-known stallions and facilities that I won't deal with again because of how they treated me.
