Location: South Central Florida | This is my first experience here...but seriously 3 weeks late? Is that okay? My vet said she could actually go over 12 months and it happens.
Another breder told me that in our area, our strange weather pattern is causing lots of mares to go long. Super hot a few days.... high 80's low 90's, then front and a high of 70 with low 50's at night. I love it, but is that true? Can weather cause late babies?
I have the breding contract and know exactally which days she was bred, also have the ultrasound with picture that confirmed breding, and gave me the March 2nd due date.
People keep telling me I did the math wrong, or I counted wrong....but I'm talking to vets and looking at paperwork, The stud is 100 miles away, and none here so breding dates are locked in.
She is very big and looks amazing. She is also very very happy.
Vet said I could bring her in if I want, but I just hate to load her up and drive her an hour, then wait, then an hour home blah blah...
She has bagged, and it went away and came back...the bag is hard not soft. I thought she waxed about a week ago, one time, but then that went away too. Her but is all giggly and squishy.
Has anyone had one go a full year? I gues that would put me about April 1... which when I think about it, would make sence to this mare....she is probably laughing at me. Also, she is a maiden.

Location: ND | lol breathe :) Baby will come when she's fully cooked & ready to arrive. One of my mares goes pretty close to a year. My first two foals where pasture breedings so I had no set dates to go by, I think that's almost easier since you don't "know" that the baby should be here on a set day. |

Location: Opelousas, LA | All but one of mine have gone over by at least two weeks, I am currently waiting on one that was due 3/3. I know exactly when these mares were bred because it was our stud and they were bred right here.
I think it is just the wierd weather this year. We normally have ice or snow once every ten years or so, we had it three times this winter. |

| We have had mares go over 365 days....no fun!!!
That said, right now I've got one at 340, 339, and one at 328....the 328 made looks a lot closer than the 339 mare! |

| We have a mare who never goes under a year that comes to foal. She goes like 370 days every time they breed her, so every few years they have to give her a year off so they can still have early babies. She throws gorgeous foals every time, so relax. She will foal when she knows that foal is good and ready. I'd rather have late than early. |

| Yes to all above! I'd rather one way over on paper than early on the ground.
Even with known breeding dates, the mare could have ovulated as late as 2 days past the last breeding and been fertilized successfully, adding another 2 days to the 'begin' date. Many of the long time breeders say '11 months and 11 days.' I think of it as 3 weeks shy of a year. But many go over on that and it's nbd.
Watch for the waxing again. When it gets a little more substance to it and is there, then gone all in the same day, or if you see a lil drip of liquid, you'll be close. Also look at the whoohaa. It will lengthen significantly in the hours before labor onset. You won't be able to miss it or mistake it.

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | Relax your mare could easily go to 13 . I have had 2 and one inlaw that went 13 months and it's not un common. If she bagged a little and went away relax it is normal. When she is ready she will start pacing, look back at her stomache and even rock her hind legs in discomfort. If your lucky she will have wax dripping like that of a candle melting off the side and drying then she will foal within 24 hour or 48 trying to remember. Put a leather halter on your mare so you can have control if need be. Not all mares will let you handle their foals. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | Currently waiting on my mare too. She's not horribly late or anything, but she had her last one around 322 days. We are to like 332 now. She is giving some strong signs, really bagged up without shrinking, holding her tail to the side, but she hasn't loosened up in the back end much and she's been holding her tail to the side for three weeks. Otherwise she's fine. It'll come when she's ready. Of course, I need to keep telling myself that too. It's hard to be patient. |
