Just posted that they have decided to cancel the Spring Fling this year due to the EHV-1 outbreak. We planned on going to so my sister could get a run under her belt before Lincoln. A little bummed but was probably the best decision.

What do you guys think? A little over kill or the best move?

In my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry. There will always be other great barrel races to go to.

Thank God!  I'm sick because girls that were at the Winona run also went to Sioux Falls to the rodeo and open 4D where a bunch of our local girls were running.  I'll be running with those same girls in Letcher and Lincoln.  The whole thing makes me sick and people need to smarten up and not go to this stuff until its under control.

Some also went on to Colombia BB I heard. We have been home all winter and gave horses a well needed break. Those who were in Winona should have had more caution in the weeks since.

My thoughts exactly.  We've stayed home all winter too and enjoyed a nice break.  This is going to escalate very rapidly unless those exposed stay home but doesn't sound like its going to happen.  They're putting a lot of horses at risk.

Yes, I looked at the results from the sc productions show and at least 2 girls with multiple horses were at Columbia barrel bash.  I think it's good Cedar Rapids cancelled because they are even closer to MN than the barrel bash was. Luckily for me there is a smaller show close by that same weekend so I can go make a run before Lincoln.

There is a local show this weekend so it looks like we will be headed there. If things are a little rough we just haul in to an indoor and get some practice time in.

Do you think this will effect the Bonus Run in Lincoln or is it too soon to tell?

Since Renea had the Barrel Bash at Columbia and posted lots of info about precautions, I'm pretty dang sure that unless it gets lots worse, it will go on as planned.

She stated on fb that all horses will need health papers and coggins. She said it was on the receipt when we entered.

It annoys me that they will cancel Spring Fling but continue to host other events as though the barrel horses affected haven't been traveling, boarded with others, etc.

Makes me feel a little stereotyped for being a barrel racer.

But we have other events that weekend and they hadn't cashed the check yet.

Unfortunately there are some horses that are carriers and show no symptoms, but can shed the virus.  You would have no way to know unless you had your horse tested. In others, once exposed, incubation/symptoms "can take up to 10-12 days to show".  A race I was at March 8, my horse as well as 100 + others may have been exposed, because the threat/outbreak wasn't realized...again very very likely the person/persons whose horse (s) may have been the carriers/infected had no idea, they may have shown no symptoms of being ill.  Without knowing any of our horses were exposed, many of us went on to other shows/races the following weekend. "Unknowingly"  possibly spreading the virus to hundreds more...Hence why all the local vets have requested, in the best interst of ALL to "stay home" till this settles down. After I found out, it was after the race on the 16 March, we had my horse and 2 others tested, all three came back neg. and I have been taking temps on all 10 at our place since then to be sure, and we're staying put.  Not worth the risk, always another day, another race.
