Regular Posts: 92 Location: here there and everywhere!	My gelding currently has on straight bar shoes on front feet only. Long story short thought we were dealing with navicular vet said there was some swelling around the sidebone and he wanted to throw on side bar shoes to protect his heels. His back feet are bare right now he has great feet no cracking nothing. As far as soundness goes he is sound on the front but continues to cross fire with both back leads. I AM getting hocks injected (this will be a second time) but I was wondering if he should be shod in the back as well?? And if I do shoe him would regular shoes be okay in the back with straight bars in the front?(my first time ever having these shoes on a horse) Would it help any? He doesnt appear to be sore in the back feet Had a rough year last year with him. Literally went lame in 3 legs then a shoulder. After hocks were injected it seemed like he was getting better with the cross firing but then he went lame in the shoulder and was done for the rest of the year. So Cant say hock injections actually worked to help it, did see a noticeable improvement in his movement. Any thoughts would be helpful Edited by SmokeNMirrors 2014-03-31 10:46 PM

The Advice Guru Posts: 6419	I would X-ray hocks before injecting. Also some horses need to be injected every 2-3 months

Regular Posts: 92 Location: here there and everywhere!	a friend had mentioned that as well. Since I wasnt able to really work him after the 1st time we got hocks injected this time around would be the real test as to how long it will last. this winter was brutal now working horses

Expert Posts: 4766 Location: Bandera, TX	Find a vet that can and will take their time and block your horse out in the hind. Is your horse covering his tracks at a walk? Do you see 'puffs' of dirt on the walk? If so and the horse is not covering his tracks I lean toward stifles. If they won't leave a barrel hard I've had more horses show either stifle or proximal hind suspensory be the cause. On the front side of the turn if their lazy and not using their hindquarters then I think hock. JMO

I have a horse that had 4 or 5 vets look at 1 set of xrays and horse still not proforming. Started to buy another horse buy they want 5k to get one that is as good as mine is lame. Horses that last place in 3-d one time and out of money in 4-d want 4000.00 horse needs a tune up, its not a kids horse either, 15.2 pushy wpuldnot stand to get on wouldnot medium trot, just get on head ad high as mine and only do trot like hell when you stop her, she would push right thru her bridle, the onky reason i did not buy her i am not sure how much i can fix as she didnot have a low hockset. She was trained by some highly respected people and with a little riding she was coming back to me.

Regular Posts: 92 Location: here there and everywhere!	thanks! i think blocking will be the next step. I've had so many issues with him that im ready to take him to a larger hospitable to get the works done head to toe rather than farting around with local vets.
