Elite Veteran Posts: 683 Location: Ohio	I have a cutting bred colt that just turned 3, I planned on starting him soon but he keeps having growth spurts so he as been kicked out to pasture. He has been a VERY slow grower so far so Im happy to see him start filling out and gaining a few inches. I am starting to get a little concerned though, this last growth spurt was a big one and now he looks like he is in at the knees and toeing out. Checked his feet and sure enough his hooves are unbalanced and wearing more on one side. Has anyone ever had a 3 year old suddenly get crooked knees like this?? I know trimming a certain way would help but where he is getting older Im worried about it staying like this! What would you guys do?

Elite Veteran Posts: 683 Location: Ohio	I planned on calling my vet tomorrow am. Hoping I can get her to come out as my trailer is out of commission at the moment and she lives an hour away. Ugh, I am done with young prospects. My last few young horses have either been accident prone or had growth issues.

Expert Posts: 1611 Location: bring on the heat, NV	I think that if you are having growth issues and on several colts you need to evalutate your feed program. What are doing nutrition wise and what are the sellers program like? If your pasture has a mineral definecy that you are meeting that can also factor in.

This is the first one with actual growth issues. I had one filly with issues but bought the mare already bred, filly came out club footed... This is the first horse that I have ever seen do this. The other colt had a run in with neighbors barbed wire fence after deer ran through my electric tape fencing. This guy is on full choice grass hay, free choice mineral and salt blocks, he is also getting TC Complete. I did add some alfalfa and beet pulp last month when our temps were below zero. My grazing pasture has been nonexistent since October/November due to winter. Edited because I'm sleep deprived and listed wrong feed! lol Edited by GrittyCowgirl 2014-04-06 11:14 PM
