Riding a short necked horse?

Is it just me or is it really difficult?! I'm having such a hard time keeping my hands where they need to be. I feel like in order to keep my hands low I have to be leaning way forward and can't sit back like I need to. My mare is real compact and a hard turner and I feel like I'm always out of
position. Any advice?

That is something I look at when looking at prospects. I have a huge problem riding a short necked horse. It's just me, I know I have a problem. I just love a long necked horse.

I had a lot of trouble with my reins flipping over on my mare's neck at the second barrel because she turned so hard and quick, short neck and long arms dont work well. I had to tie a couple rubber bands together and put on my reins under neck. It was an ugly contraption but worked. Then I switched reins before I ran and made short as possible. We got it together a couple months down the road. Just takes time, you will get it.

I'm short armed so I actually have a harder time riding my long necked horse, LOL!!! My short necked one suites my "conformation" better...

I am the exact same way!!
I feel so weird on a long necked horse. I always feel like me reins are to short but in all reality it is most likely my arms....

I feel your pain!!! My mare is 14.0 HH and a FIREBALL. Very sensative mouth and I try to stay out of it as much as possible but its difficult! When she turns a barrel all of a sudden I have all this loose rein that I fumble with because of the way she carries herself. Glad you asked this question now I am dialed in. Best of luck!

I think sometimes too it is how they turn a barrel and how they leave it. I do have trouble grabbing mane on my short necked horse where as I don't or haven't had that problem on my long necked horse
(they both go left barrel first and mane is on the right side
) but I think that has more to do with the fact the short necked mare turns and runs with her head up a bit and the long necked horse is low headed and certainly leaves low. Figuring out rein length is for me the biggest key on a short necked one.
