RareGold#2 - 2014-04-11 12:53 PM Why low starch feed?
Starch is hard to break down in the gut. So the stomach produces more acid to try to break down the starches and sugars in the feed, which causes more issues with an already ulcer prone horse. High starch feeds along with stress cause ulcers. Both cause large amounts of acid in the gut. Sweet feeds are usually the bad guys but any feed with corn and heavy amounts of oats and barley are VERY high in starch. Corn can add up to 20% more starch to a feed just by itself. The only way to treat ulcers is by omeprazole. I've always had luck with THE so I wouldn't hesitate to try their GastroPLUS. But aloe Vera juice will NOT treat ulcers. And alfalfa is great but it will not TREAT ulcers. It will just coat the stomach and mask the symptoms.
what she said. After the ulcers are healed, these are great things to do to help prevent them...alfalfa and low starch.

RE: Cheapest Ulcer Treatment
Is renew gold considered low starch? She cribs a little, easily stopped with a collar, and I have heard low starch feeds help with that. She doesn't crib as much as when i had her on omolene 200. I will probably get my vets omeprazole tomorrow for her. She eats lots of hay and alfalfa and minimal grain

I don't know the exact NSC content but yes, it was developed as an alternative to high starch feeds. Omolene is a terribly high starch feed. One of the highest starch commercially produced feeds out there.
You want to look for high fat, low starch. Triple Crown has some good choices. The new Pro Force line from
Nutrena look good on paper at least and I've heard several people having good luck with them.

I sell it. You can pm me here or I have a banner ad that floats around up top and sometimes down below that will take you to my website for prices and my email to order. Either way
