I have been unsuccessful in my search. For those of you that hand mix your own feed I would like to know what you use and why. How much? Etc... Is it cost effective?

I am looking at starting to mix my own feed for a horse that I am currently treating for ulcers but also have others that don't have ulcer issues. I have heard that grains are not good for the ulcer prone horse. TIA

Two roaches were munching on garbage in an alley when one engages a discussion about a new restaurant."I was in that new restaurant across the street," said one. "It's so clean! The kitchen is spotless, and the floors are gleaming white. There is no dirt anywhere--it's so sanitary that the whole place shines.""Please," said the other roach frowning. "Not while I'm eating!"

 I feed Renew Gold to
my ulcer prone horse.  It has no grain and you feed only 1lb a day.  You will need to add a vitamin /mineral supplement .  I also feed Timothy and Alfalfa hay.

So is that just like a powder? And your horse will eat it? I already have the problem horse on OxyMax as a general supplement. I could add a mineral supplement if I need to.

No it's pellet form.  I love it.  1lb a day last 30 days

For about 5 years I mixed per feeding for 6 head. Straight grains, flax, soybean meal, and then a general supplement, and alfalfa cubes. It was affordable until barley went to $16 a bag and 10% all grain was $10.

Basically, for a horse that had colon ulcers, I had to eliminate all molassas, beet pulp (even non-molassas kind) and joint supplements.

So what did you end up feeding the horse with colon ulcers? I'm beginning to think my dad's rope horse has them and I've been trying to figure out what to feed him because everything gives him diarrhea. I think he would be fine on 0 grain at all but my dad is convinced he needs at least a little bit.

I have ulcer prone horse and all my others. Here's my list and amazingly, not expensive.
Orcard/alfalfa mix
1 lb Renewgold
1/3 cup Redmonds Conditioner
1/2 cup diamataceous earth (sp)
1 tablespoon kelp
2 scoops THE (Muscle Mass, Arthritis, joint combo, ulcer protect
I feed hay 2x a day and split the other stuff in half so they get it 2 times a day as well. Then, we load up & ride at our local arena about 3 or 4 times a week, so, I feed hay in the trailer too. The hay before they work is so that the acid in their belly doesn't just splash around in their gut.
