Location: Muskogee, OK | I know there have been multiple flax seed posts... I just am looking for the answer to 2 questions and can't sift through all of those posts at the moment so bare with me..
1. How much do you feed per head per day? 2. Do you grind it?
Thanks!

 Vodka for Lunch
Location: Lala Land | You can buy it in powder form or you can grind your own fresh. I've looked at the Triple Crown feeding and it says 6oz to 1 lb per 1000 lbs of body weight. |

Location: North Dakota | 1 cup per day. I buy it ground, because I tend to burn through a bag in a month, some say it doesn't keep, I've never had my horses refuse it. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | it has some extra benefits when fed whole. I have never seen it in their poo...going with the theory that they crap it all out if fed whole |

Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California | 1 cup a day - whole. We have several being fed flax seed and they all have nice coats and extra energy.
2 cups daily is TOO much... lol |

Location: Willows, CA | Flax is better used if ground fresh or stabilized. It will be digested higher in the system if fed that way, which is good. It will be digested, and mostly used if fed whole. The difference is where it is digested. There is less use of the fatty acids when the whole seed travels farther down the system before the hard outer shell can be defeated by digestive enzymes. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | This is my favorite weblink for lots of info on Flax. I sell it through T.H.E. ground and you just need to feed a small scoop so it lasts a long time, but the choice is yours. http://www.understanding-horse-nutrition.com/flax-seed.html |

Location: Muskogee, OK | Thanks again everyone! Please do not take this in a negative way whatsoever, but I have done lots of research on flax. I know it's benefits, why to feed it and have actually done quite a bit of research on ground vs. whole. With this post I am just looking for hard numbers, how much you feed per head (a numerical measurement here, whether it be cups or ounces not just a "small scoop") and if you grind or not. Just trying to get a feel for what everyone is doing out there. Again, I appreciate all the responses! |

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | I love it.. my take on it -- I buy the tractor Supply brand - Dumor - ultra shine (already ground type) in a purplish bag - i think 20 or 25 lbs... flax and rice bran supp.. also loaded w/other vit's min's... anyway i only feed 1/2 to 1 measuring cup per day per horse.. just depends on the horse... feed 1/2 cup to the yearlings/weanlings.. 1 cup to the fullgrown horses and broodmares... i split it up btwn 2 feedings so its spread out a little bit... the bag lasts a long time even w/my herd.. and its like 29 bucks a bag.. compared to all the others i found it was the best bang for my buck. Previously fed Omegahorseshine (also already ground) - was basically same thing when compared label but the tractor supply brand is like 15 bucks a bag less.. horses seem to like it -they lick their buckets clean.. had one yearling that would leave it since its kinda loose and falls between the pellets but she'dalways lick it out of the bucket before next feeding...
