There was a long roll call thread before the event, but I havent read much after.

How was it and how did you do?

I was told one of the pens was a little tricky for rookie riders and or horses.

I ran in the smaller arena first which I really liked but my gelding looked at everything and didn't clock well in there. My mare did better but was really ratey and I sat too early so we could of done a lot better. I had only ran in that arena once in 2008. The Bonus run, didn't do worth a crap. I didn't care for the lighting in there, it seemed really dark. I was beat and ready to go home by the end of the day.

That lighting messed with my eyes too.  I ran in the little pen 6 times on Friday.  One of my mares and the gelding had excellent runs in there.  I think I liked the little pen better than the big one.  When I got to the big pen on Saturday my good mare had tons of run!  LOL  It was kinda wild but in the end I ended up winning $1000 between the Open and the Bonus.

I made 10 runs in 3 days and won a consolation/hard luck prize basket with hair goodies in it for my flying dismount in the bonus round. Apparently, I'm not capable of riding Clifford across the pen to the 2nd barrel with one leg way out behind me and my butt 8 inches above the cantle. Cliff worked well all weekend, but we got 2 barrels both runs in the little pen and then I got lifted up trying to get past the first barrel and it ended badly in the bonus round.
Joker made two solid 3D runs in the little pen and I think was a little sore by Saturday night's bonus round because he didn't work well, hit the 1st barrel and would have been in the very bottom of the 4D.
Chance was just a few spots out of 3D money in the little pen his 1st run then had a terrible outing the second run and didn't work well in the bonus round either.
I won another qualifier on Joker and late entered my friend's little mare, but I messed up the 1st barrel and probably cost us a 5D check or being in the 4D crack. As it was, she worked well.

I have already been back to the vet trying to find more of the problems on my horses because there's no other explanation for Chance doing so poorly. Probably shouldn't have run Joker twice in one day but when I entered him, I planned on subbing him out with my 4th horse, then he was my best horse for that little pen so I left him in the second run and he must have been feeling his age by the evening when we ran in the big pen.

The little pen (open race)  is tough because the first barrel is about 40 feet from the end of the alley so you have to pick it up quick. A lot of people struggle in the big pen (bonus round) because its a really long run to the first barrel and the barn is a little darker than the small pen. I prefer the big pen because I like to really get one rolling to the 1st barrel, and I have big long-strided horses who can really open up in that barn. The little barn just ticks Chance off because its so tight. I am definitely not running him in there twice next year and may not enter him there at all.

No money for me, but still had great time. Was running a borrowed horse and I only got one pratice run in before I went up to Lincoln.
My first run I hit the second barrel on my first open run, then ran in the bonus round that night. Didn't give her enough pocket and hit the first barrel really hard with my knee. Still have mild swelling in that knee! Saturday am open had a nice run of 14.6 but fell mid 2D. Planning on going to the Run for the Cruise race later this year.

Had to run in the bonus pen first, that's the biggest pattern we've been on and the first was nice but we got a bit lost between the first and second and he found it kind of late. All in all he handled himself well for only his second time running a pattern without an expo.

Poured over some videos Friday night and made the decision to switch him to the left Saturday night in the open. He's been blowing his left turns a bit and we have an appt Monday to get hocks checked, but decided one left and 2 rights was a better game plan since he has gone left before. First run in the open pen I didn't send him left with conviction, he questioned me at the top of the ally and we ended up steam rolling over the 1st. The rest was lovely.

Sunday morning I sent the booger left with authority and we had what might have been our best run ever - ended up with a 5d check in the helmet cam sidepot.

Excited to get his hocks done and start pushing him more

I had a blast. I wasn't real fast but ended up in the money in the. 5D. I think our turns were a little slow.  I'm ordering a video so we'll see. My daughter 4H rodeos on him so I need to get it figured out. I had a little trouble with the lighting in th e bonus race arena too.

I had very consistent runs. Bottom of 3D top of 4D all weekend in both pens. Won 4D Bonus Bounty money for winning the round Fri night in the big pen. Fell in the cracks everywhere else.

Was super pleased with my little gelding. He beat my main mount for the first time in a head to head No Mistakes set of runs. This came on our final run for the weekend, but with no races and barely any practice around the barrels since the end of Sept. :)

We almost were turned out for our open run so ran super unprepared and rattled. So no good there but we redeemed ourselves with a 16.5 in the open to be 6th in the 2D! Had a blast and cannot wait for next year to try our luck at that open arena again! So mad at myself for that one!!!

I took a filly that had not been off the place in her life, and a 6 year old that fractured her hock last year and had 8 months off.  It was that one's first big race back.
My filly ran in the 4D/5D.  Which I was happy with.   I've only had 45 days on her to begin with, the only reason I took her was because the horse I had originally entered got hurt and had to be retired.
My 6 year old ran good.  She ran in the 1D in the open races in the small pen but wasn't fast enough to win any money.  She made a really big mistake in the Bonus Round but it ended up getting us a good check in the 2D.  So I am not going to complain.
I've had better weekends but I've sure had worse too.

Ran in the big pen.  The lighting in there had much to be desired. I Like the big pattern, but we did not do so well.
The pony took the bits and ran off coming out of 1st.  It wasn't pretty - but once I got him shut down at the fence by the
2nd barrel, made him complete the pattern......  I chalk it up to more life experiences in the barrel racing world.

Still glad that I entered though.

It is a little darker, but I guess it doesn't bother me because I'm so used to running late at night in rodeo arenas that are poorly lit (Hepler for instance) and the barn at Lawrence where every single KS01 show has been this year is really dark. I just try to get in there early and let their eyes and mine adjust.

when my bank account and pride recover, I might be glad I entered. lol.

I was really happy with my horses, but didn't win anything but 3 fast time drag awards out of my 4 open runs. My gelding was in the 1D both open runs, I think in the top 50 both runs (haven't been able to look at full results yet). I definitely liked the little pen better, just fit my horses better.

My mare on Friday in the open had a little tough luck...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isRAebtlPeA&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

My gelding on Friday was 4th in the PM session and over ran the first barrel...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm3HYcqp5ms&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

I was hoping my gelding would get faster on Saturday, but I think the concrete did a number on him, even with his booties on the whole time...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTF2uDQGUCg&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

My mare made me happy on Saturday in the open, and ran in the 2D with a really pretty run...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTvPqYjBzyU&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

Then...it rained. My gelding and I were a little late getting ready on Sunday--they weren't announcing the big pen in the barns like they'd been doing the previous days, did a short warm up and got POURED on getting from the warm up to the arena, and I literally stepped back on him while they were calling me in. Didn't get a good route to the first, and like I said, I think the concrete took some of his fire out of him. With all that going against us, I was happy with his 2D time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNFhu6dLu80&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

My mare was sore from the concrete as well, though not as bad as my gelding. She isn't a big horse, and doesn't thrive in big pens, usually runs out of air. So I was really happy with how hard she tried. Had a couple little toe stubs--which she hasn't been doing since being treated for EPM, but I really think she was just plain old exhausted. She wanted to get the 2nd barrel again, but let me hold her off it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9449LvgbQ-U&list=UUeKtzmJqvEVD2B6o5n...

Since my horses were all entered up, I had an extra qualifier from my gelding's Friday run and a friend of mine didn't get one and had me run her horse. NEVER stepped foot on him until #185 was running, and he was #215. So I don't think we did too shabby, but a little practice time would've made for a cleaner run. He's a nice horse :) I told her a spanked him one too many times...if he'd have been .006 slower we'd have won the 3D, LOL!
