Long story short, we've been working since December to get papers transferred on a mare we bought at BLS. The lady that sold her wasn't the current owner on the papers but she is the one who signed the transfer. BLS consigned the horse anyway and now we can't reach the prior owner or the person who signed the transfer. The AQHA has been sitting on this since December and they don't even check up on it unless we call and ask about it We've called 3 times. They've sent 2 letters out to both owner and the person who sold the mare and received no response. Last time we called
(before today
) they put us on hold and said they called the person who signed the transfer and she was supposed to be faxing the papers over that day. Nothing has been done and they don't even have a record of the call stating they contacted her. They are sending out ANOTHER set of letters. This is a nicely bred mare with earnings. If we can't get the papers we can't show her or breed her. Who can be contacted at the AQHA to actually act on this? They suspend people all the time for stupid things, can't they suspend the memberships if they don't get this taken care of and isn't there any other options?

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do and AQHA can't suspend or fine someone for not doing their paperwork- I wish they could.
Keep on them, find out who the last owner of record was and if they can give you an address. You might be able to locate the former owner yourself. You can also call and ask for the supervisor/head of the registration department.
You can also contact the sale where you bought the horse and find out why they took a horse in that wasn't being sold by the owner of record. They may have a copy of the bill of sale from the recorded owner to the person who consigned the horse. Or get you in contact with person who consigned the horse.
Good Luck!

I would be ripping BLS a new one. AQHA can't do much as previously stated. BLS should have made sure paperwork was in order before allowing horse to be consigned. I know some sales make you send in paperwork prior to sale so they can check it. The last thing a buyer from a reputable sale wants is to buy a horse that is not registerable as stated. Good luck.

I ALWAYS check to make sure that paper work is in order or I move on to the next horse. It should be the responsibility of the seller to make sure that the transfer is done. Why would the person selling the horse sign a transfer if the papers were in someone else's name? The auction is responsible for the papers being in order if the horse goes through their sale. I would tell them to get it straightened out or give you your money back. They should have announced this at the sale also.
I have been to a small sale that has been in business for around 100 years. I have seen them let a horse out of the sale ring because the papers were not in order. They do not want to have screw ups. This is why they have had a sale so long.

Iu thought i was going to have this issue with a mare i picked up off the track in NM. Long story short. AQHA said we will send out letters and if the owner does not respond in 30 days we will automatically sign the papers over to you. and have the horse registered in your name.
Luckily things worked out for me and i got papers from the owner. but if what AQHA said above^ is true. I would think you would have papers. ESP since the sale was in Dec
