This post hits home. Literally. I live about 15 minuted from IV also have many friends who attend UCSB. One of which was a witness. Yes, Isla Vista is known for many horrible things but also is a wonderful place to be in the day time. Many great restaurants (Freebirds) and it really is a small community full of some wonderful, intelligent, young people. All I can say is prayers to the families of the victims as well as the full recovery to those still hospitalized, and emotional healing to all witnesses.

Edited: This could have happened anywhere where pretty girls were including state street, or any of the beaches as everyone is out and about this week with the 90+ weather.

Ugh I couldn't imagine something like this on State - pretty girls, surrounded by tourists and families out for food and shopping.

I live in Oregon now, but both my husband and I are from SB and visit several times a year. Your mention of Freebirds made me crave a burrito.... And a burger from Habit.

And of course finished with McConnells or Blenders

But on a serious point is that people who are this mentally disturbed can/have taken it out on any body at any time. The first few post I read over was about what a bad party town IV is known for but just wanted to say theres not all bad in Isla Vista.

Anniemae - 2014-05-24 10:35 PM When a parent losses a child and expresses their grief, some tend to blame everything and anything they can, frantically trying to explain the randomness, trying to understand that which can not be understood...  They are the ones who lost a child to this senseless act, I'm thankful that I am not in their shoes. Let's not judge the parents...

This can and has happened at other college's across the country.  Can we just all pray for the victims, their family and friends?
The problem is there are those who use grieving parents to try to manipulate the rest of us into buying their agenda. And people fall for it.
I understand, people will use this to push THEIR own agenda  - whether it makes a lick of sense or not is a whole different issue.

College students were targeted and no, they were not physically on the UCSB campus. Nevertheless, they were the prime targets. 6 have died, another 7 were taken to the hospital.  A local young woman was one of the victims.  The parents get to grieve any darn way the please IMHO.  By the grace of God, I'm not walking in their shoes.
There is a major difference or contrast in greiving personally and attempting to push a political agenda down every one else's throats.
And you have the right to tell these parents how they can and cannot grieve? They just lost their child...

Prayers would be a nice gesture, just a suggestion...

An observation only. Not a command. Still however, said observation is correct.

Itsme - 2014-05-24 8:53 PM I encourage you to go watch his youtube videos, he was 100% jacked in the head and probably from birth.

I didn't watch the video. We, the government, can't regulate the insane. Simple as that... I agree with you that he was probably born that way and coupled with extreme indulgence and narcissism, his twisted mind took over.  As far as bullying, I don't agree that this is the case. Kids are mean, since the dawn of time, kids have gotten picked on. Part of growing up and that word, bullying, has gotten over played. I feel badly for the parents of the victims, so horrible and sad.

Talking about how people can grieve how they want. Sometimes this is how legislation gets changed. For example..when my husband first went on the force and when someone was acting nuts their family could call and they would be taken to a mental facility for observation etc. Some liberals felt it wasn't protecting the rights of the crazy people so that ended and now there isn't much anyone can do when someone threatens and just plain acts crazy until they actually do something and now the same people are crying about that. You can't have it both ways.

^^^^THIS…….even parents can’t get anything done if their child is showing disturbing tendencies OR they don’t care enough to even try. To blame bullying, is ludicrous. It has become the “norm” to blame bullying……children have been bullied for YEARS…..the difference is that parents used to be involved in their children’s lives and taught them how to “suck it up”….now the child sits in his/her bedroom to brood and play with video games, etc….no engagement with parents, siblings, etc……how many of you got to sit in your room growing up? I spent my time doing homework at the kitchen table, watching TV with the family or playing outside…….as did MY children.....

Exactly....the libs changed the laws and now you can't do squat until they actually do something and then, of course, it's too late and they then play the blame game. The bad guys have a lot more rights then the good guys. I watche this change over the years  and the change wasn't for the good.

I am not stating bullying IS the cause but I guarantee it contributed to this incident. You can go on blaming mental illness which is also over played but the fact of the matter some people can sustain less than others before they snap. This may be due to mental illness, may be due to neglect as a child, may be due to abuse, may be any number of things... typically though people who act this way do have a chemical imbalance in their brain. However, it is LUDICROUS to compare bullying 20 years ago to bullying now. With social medial and the lack of parenting, its much worse.

Obviously yes, kids need to have thick skin because not everyone is going to be nice to you. And you have to learn to let it roll off your back. However, bullying is a huge issue whether you believe it or not. Kids are cruel, yes there have always been bullies but if you ask school officials, teachers who have been teaching 30-40 years, they will tell you its much much worse.

I do agree that parenting is a huge issue.... they're not involved on the victim or the perp side. They are too busy making excuses for their child or coddling them or flat out ignoring it all together. Kids sit and stew and make up their own solutions and this is when school shootings, suicide, etc occur.

I will not argue that parents are up a creek without a paddle when it comes to showing concern for their mentally ill children or kids with dangerous tendencies. However, this kid was disturbed long before his youtube videos raised awareness to his family.

I agree with you about the bullying and social media but my point is there has to be consequences. When our daughter was in 3rd grade there was a boy that kept picking on our daughter. He would kick her, pull her hair and when she said something to the teacher she was called a tattle tale. He finally knocked her down on the ashphalt playground and put her in the hospital for 2 days for obsevation as her head blew up like a basketball. What happened..nothing. I went to the principle and he told me kids will be kids..I ended up calling the mother and she told me he liked her and that is why he picked on her. I told her to tell him to never look or speak to her again and if he did I would come over and beat the crap out of her to show her how much I liked her. This crap goes way back as our daughter is now 43 years old. We taught her to fight back and when he messed with her again she knocked him on his butt and guess who got in trouble? Yes..she did because the teacher didn't see him mess with her first. We pulled her out and sent her to private school and there if anyone did anything they got punished on the spot.

I completely agree. Schools needs to get more involved in addition to the parents. There has to be a line but I remember being in school and teachers witnessed the cruelest acts and just turned the other way.

Ive read the mother of the killer called the cops on him and they couldnt or wouldnt do anything.

I keep hearing this from half-informed people.

1. Santa Barbara SO had a second hand request for a welfare check only. Stupid therapist saw videos, called a mental health service instead of police directly, and the service called the police. By the time it got to them, there was no info about weapons or videos, just a welfare check on a possibly suicidal young man. They did not have anywhere near cause needed for a search warrant. And even if they did, all they could have done is seize his guns for 24 hours.

2. The therapist then called the family (instead of police) after seeing the super scary video. By then it was too late. The therapist had weeks' advance notice and never once contacted law enforcement. THIS is who needs to be held accountable.

The kid didn't know who he was and does it really matter? He was a mental case. The libs think they can legislate a perfect world. Criminals don't abide by the laws and what part of that don't they get?

Trust me, we don't want to. It would be super nice to get thru a shift without being asked to be a roadside psychiatrist. Even better would be if families could (with cooperation of mental health professionals) involuntarily commit dangerous mental patients.

As always hindsight is 20/20..............to second guess one is really not going to bring anyone back.........but the lawsuits are going to fly.....and the blame has begun....already heard the police are to blame.........."they" should have done more...........really........where we the parents........did they just wake up and their son was having issues...........why did he have a counselor.........just saying.......

And now it is time to blame guns again............wait he stabbed 3 men to death first...........lets get the knives too.........just saying...........
My thoughts do we see a pattern here...........its seems so...........young white men.........and a breakdown of the tradition family...........just asking.....
