My mare was just diagnosed with upward fixation of the patella. Has anyone had to deal with this?? My vet mentioned possible surgery if she doesn't respond to drugs and rest. Has anyone had the suregery done and what was the outcome? Were you able to ever run barrels again?

I had a mare that had the surgery.  Didn't do well.  I would do a internal blisterAlso if you have access to a Theraplate do the stifle treatment.

When you say "the" surgery, which surgery are you referring to?  The surgery that puts two or three nicks in the ligament to create scar tissue resulting in a tightened ligament or the surgery that actually clips the ligament.  I don't know that I, myself, would bother with the first one I just mentioned but I wouldn't hesitate at all to have the ligament clipped on a horse that has true fixation of the patella ligament.

The surgery would be to completely sever the ligament.
