I usually feed on a schedule... my horses literally STARE at me through the window over the fence right at 6am every morning so it's hard NOT to feed them at the same time BUT there are times that they have to wait, if I'm going to want to ride during their feeding time, I usually split their feed up and feed them half early and the other half an hr or so after I ride them. I'm careful to let them have time to digest the food and cool down. Never had a problem.
I think it's good to mostly keep them on a schedule but we basically give ours free choice hay and they have pasture that way they always have something in their bellies. it's just the grain we feed on a schedule. some people say it's nice to feed them between a couple hours of the same time everytime so they kinda have a routine but it has some give in times to it.

livexlovexrodeo - 2014-05-19 8:49 AM I've actually heard that feeding on too strict of a schedule is bad for them because then if something comes up and they don't get fed when they "expect" to be fed it can stress them out. And like someone else mentioned when you're competing and especially if you're hauling a lot, a set schedule can be just about impossible. Mine get fed in the morning and at night and are out on pasture 24/7. They are usually fed before 9am
(sometimes super early if I have to be to work in the morning
) and no later than 7pm at night.
ditto...ย when I used to have a set time they would walk the fence and stress out .and I would to if I was 30 minutes late.. No more... unless they are stalled.. then I stay consistent.. I think things come up and Id rather them not be on a alarm.... now its within a few hours each time andย they are out on lush pasture or have hay all the time..ย
Agree with both of you. All of my horses are turned out together on a few acres of dry lot, so if they are on a set schedule and I don't get out there they are pacing and trying to fight each other the whole time. My horses also only get fed once a day, at night. They get enough hay for the entire day at night and we keep straw at the bottom of the feeders so they have something to nibble on when it gets low. In the Spring they do have a little grass to eat during the day that comes up, but that's it. I have found that this schedule works the best for them and for us. I do grain my horses, but there are some days they are lucky to see me. They don't seem to pace and fight at feeding time nearly as bad as they used to when they had a different schedule.

If you rodeo, you know that staying on a set schedule is impossible. You're not going to feed grain at 7 pm when the rodeo starts at 7 pm...
