So I did the stupid thing and thought "I'll save my nice ESP saddle pad and use my other pad for trail riding"....stupid mistake and should've kept to the nice pad which has worked perfect in the past. I have been doing a lot of hill work and now my mare has a saddle sore, on her mid/lower back, which I have never had to deal with on any of my horses .Never ever had this happen, so don't really know how to treat it ...
At first it was swollen, which was how I noticed it, now swelling has gone down but its hairless. Not an open sore
(yet
) but will be if I mess with it. My mare is very thin haired & thin skinned and also a gray so now she has this dark hairless spot :
( I'm putting a triple antibiotic ointment on it to keep it moist, but I don't want it to turn into a big slow healing wound . Obviously no riding, and so much for Saturday's race :
(
Thoroughly bummed out and mad at myself..

I think it's more then just the pad, sounds like your saddle dont fit. If your saddle fit good, a sore would never have happen no matter the pad, unless the pad is super dirty and stiff. But I would be checking how you're saddle is fitting.

You have a saddle fit problem, any chance your tree is broken?

Same saddle I have ridden her in for past year, but I have always used my ESP pad with it. Riding 5-6 days a week , never any sores or soreness
( and this mare lets you know if any little thing is out of whack in her world lol
). Then just 10 days ago I changed to a recently purchased
( 2nd hand
) thinner pad. My mare is kind of long backed and maybe the thinner pad didn't offer enough support ? I will have my saddle looked at this weekend by my trainer, see about the tree :

I agree. Have you thought about trying Vetricin on the sore. Edited because my chemo brain took over when I was posting, sorry.
