If your currently using an ulcer treatment do you feel its necessary to add anything else to their diet? I feel like your putting medicine there where it wouldn't normally be, lowering stomach acid, and slightly disrupting things to get the ulcers to heal. Is anything else needed? Please share.

I cut out grain and opt for rice bran pellets . Also alfalfa hay instead of just grass hay. Done the aloe Vera thing but now just maintain with maintainence dose of omeprazole instead.

I found this that I've ordered for one I've got coming in that most likely has stomach issues. I have an ulcer treatment course I'm going to run through and add this as a supplement. I'm thinking about starting my older ones on it. I like that it has powdered aloe vera, slippery elm, and most other "natural" ulcer helping ingredients. Not to steal the thread but hoping maybe someone else has tried it and seen results.

I used the EXCEL TM with great results. I recommend it. I treated with omeprazole/raditine and added that to their strategy on going and used a maintenance dose of the omeprazole the day before and day of a run. I have just recently switched from Strategy to Renew Gold, did a treatment of omeprazole/raditine and so far haven't had to use any supplements or maintenance dose of the omeprazole and our alley issues have stopped. I am hoping the Renew Gold (and FORCO) is all I need from now on, but if I do start to notice ulcer issues I will get the EXCEL because it definitely works and you don't get the residual acid effect from the omeprazole.

Treating a horse for ulcers:   Use a quality omeprazole product and feed normally!  I don't feel there is a need to change much, the feeding program. JMHO from our studies.

Doug - Just to confirm... Is it ok to mix Ulcercure with Triple Crown Compete?

Very small amount and add water so the UlcerCure OTC will stick and mix.

I just did a run of omeprazole for ulcers. Then as maintanence I will make sure I cut out hard grains, and make sure there is something in their belly before putting stress such as running, riding, trailering etc on them. The studies I have done suggested this as when they get stressed, they produce more stomach acid, which then 'splashes' into the ulcer and irritates it, causing it not to heal. If there is food in the stomach, even a small amount, the acid doesnt 'splash' like it would on an empty stomach.

The omeprazole from what I understand 'neutralizes' the ph in the stomach acid so it doesnt 'burn' the ulcer, allowing it to heal. That would be the kindergarten explaination of ulcers ...

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It decreases the acid produced. I think your thinking of a buffer...for example TUMS. :)

I cut out all grains and added alfalfa/timothy pellets 2x a day in addition to my mare's free choice grass hay. Keeping her on all roughage and eating whenever she wants has helped tremendously. I do feed Equipride as well, and keep omeprazole on hand for hauling/races. She's put on weight and hasn't had any ulcer symptoms for approx 6 months now :)

I have had a busy week dealing with my first colic case (always just had mild tummy aches in the past) but this boy had to go to the vet twice to be tubed.

Anyhoo....I have successfully treated several, a good 5 or so, with GastroPLUS. I don't medicate or give anything else. I have used low starch feeds though (other than the Ultium-which he just got taken off of because he was HOT...but that is another thread). I think having them on plenty of feed helps as well, empty bellies seem to cause a lot of issues. So far one bag of GastroPLUS has done the trick for mine. I didn't see it mentioned but California Chrome uses it and believes in it. Money back guarantee comes with all the Equine Edge supplements as well
