Has anyone have any good outcomes? Would love to hear about treatments, good or bad.

Is it high or below the ankle.

Had a mare go septic in 3 days post injury, I was cleaning it, applied triple ointment.

It was a wire cut on the back of her foot, the infection went above the ankle, the vet had to surgically cut the ligament that wraps around the ankle to allow the infection to drain.

Each day the vet had to go in and surgically scrape the tendon for 7 days. She was on high powered iv antibiotics, made a complete recovery, her ankle is a little bigger then the other, but cosmetic.

She came back as the 1d horse she was, now she is high school rodeoing barrels and poles, no issues.

I had a gelding have a septic tendon sheath. I pursued every option available inclduing surgery. His fetlock is twice its normal size he gets around and is pasture sound. Its a tough one to treat. You need an excellent vet and a whole lotta luck... for me I had the vet but not the luck. Prayers to you....

Thank you! A month ago my 2-year-old filly caught her foot in a fence while horsing around with some new horses in an adjoining pasture. It took the heel bulb and some of the coronet band and hoof wall off. She was put in a cast for 2.5 weeks and had regional limbs until she developed colitis. The day after her second bandage change she came up 3 legged lame. Vet was thinking neuroma due to nerve damage. She had a slightly elevated temp so she had a regional limb done and felt much better the next day. Since then she has been intermittently sore. The vet's decided it wasn't neuroma and after another round of x-rays determined it must be a septic joint/or tendon with most likely a tendon. Due to her extensive injury and now probably septic tendon, they are very guarded about her prognosis. They have referred me to an orthopedic surgeon and told me it will cost about $5,000 to treat. Now she has not had any swelling and she is intermittently sore which vet said could be due to the antibiotics taking the edge off but not completely resolving it. I'm going to take her for another opinion tomorrow. But in the meantime appreciate all feedback from experiences dealing with this type of issue.

Posting pictures. First one is after the cast was removed. The second is after the proud flesh was removed and just prior to the second bandage change.

Prayers for you!!! I have been through this twice and have spent nearly the last 3 years doctoring and spending thousands in vet bills.

The first one was similar to yours.  It damaged the collateral cartilage.  Several months of intermittent lameness, special shoeing, and constant doctoring, we did surgery to remove the damaged cartilage.  But it was probably too late.  It turned into constant abscessing from most likely some necrotic cartilage that wasn't fully removed.  After 1.5 years of dealing with it, I threw in the towel and euthanized the mare.  It was heartbreaking.

Three months after that mare was put down, my very favorite mare EVER, had a wire cut across the back of her pastern.  First vet put her in a cast that lasted 6 days.  She went 3 legged lame about 2 weeks in and I took her to a different vet.  She had a tendon sheath infection that should have been treated by the first vet, but wasn't.  She spent 2 weeks at the second vet with daily (or almost daily) distal limb perfusions and bandaging and special boots to take the presure off the tendon.  She became more comfy so I brought her home and then the tendon basically ripped and her toe started popping of the ground.  This was in fall of 2012.  She stayed in a stall for 10 straight months with constant doctoring, special shoes, more doctoring, more vet bills and thank the good Lord she is sound enough to be a broodmare.  She had her first foal in April and is still quite lame at the trot, but otherwise comfortable.  It has been a very long road to her recovery and I'm very saddened that I can not ride her again, but thankful for her beautiful filly.  I still have to haul her 2.5 hours every 6 weeks for a decent farrier to set her up correctly.  She's basically in regular shoes, but the angles have to be correct to keep her joints lined up from the tendon laxity (the tendon is shot!)

If I had to do it again, I would spare no expense on the front end to get the very best treatment.  However, there are no guarantees.  I have tried 4 different vets on this mare.  You try one thing that you think is the answer and then BAM-another setback.  And before you know it your are thousands of dollars and thousand of man hours into it with an unrideable horse.

I wish you the very best! And I think we need a horse injury support group....LOL!!!
