Proud of my ponies - w/videos
Am I really the Weirdo?

Last night was the start of the local saddle club's barrels series, and the three horses I took all worked quite well. Chance won it, Cliff was 3rd, and Streak was 6th in the 4D
(why oh why did we do it with half second splits all the way LOL....he would have won money with a full second split to the 4D
).
I got my youngest brother talked into entering the youth on Streak because I knew the youth wouldn't be very competitive. It wound up being won with a 3D time and the youth 3D money was won with a time 7 seconds off the open 1D winner, so there's not much pressure to run super hard and its a great place to start entering a new horse. I think they should have done an exhibition, but I couldn't get Brett talked into it so their first trip through the pattern was with money on the line
(which was foolish, I should have insisted on an exhibition or a practice run earlier in the week LOL
). They didn't quite get turned tight enough around the first barrel and we think Streak's tail crossed the timer and got them a no-time, but it is a starting place and they'll do better the next time now that Brett knows more how to ride him.

Chance and I won the 1D with just a smooth, solid run. I was just hoping for a good trip and nice ground, which we got. He seems to be feeling much better after having feet injected a month ago so hopefully we are about to get on a hot streak at the rodeos.

Clifford and I struggled with a short approach to the first barrel at our Saturday rodeo, so I didn't let him go from the fence but it resulted in a pretty good first barrel and a solid 1D run that got us the 3rd place money. I'm in the process of switching all the horses to a low starch feed, which should help calm him down a lot. Hopefully we can get things lined out because I entered a rodeo w/a side gate for next Saturday the 14th and am kind of planning to run him.

Streak and I entered the open in hopes of winning the bonus qualifier in the 5D and some type of award in the series 4D, and I am pleased with his effort. He's still figuring out how to handle his body in a turn, but he is becoming more confident on the right lead and he is really trying to do things right.

We have basically six weeks until
(hopefully
) Brett runs him at the county fair and my goal is to have them clocking under 19 seconds on this pattern by the end of our series, July 2nd. My run on Streak was a 20.117 so we've got some work to do, and if it looks like Brett will have any type of decent competition at the fair, he'll run Joker instead. Streak is also getting to learn showmanship and other judged classes for the fair. So far, he is looking like a pretty good showmanship horse and I think they'll do all right in horsemanship
(hopefully the pattern doesn't include a right lead LOL
) and reining. Our county fair is pretty laid back with just a few horses so Brett doesn't need a superstar for each event. The main goal is to win the barrel racing because that trophy has been in our family for close to 20 years. Between Brett, Kyle and I, we have won it on four different horses and Streak would be the 5th.
