work barrels at home on a horse that is just now starting to kinda sorta run the pattern?? She's the first horse I trained myself and she is patterned to death and works everything great at home, it's just when we get to scary other places is when small problems arise. I was wondering how often I should work her at home? I hardly ever show my finished horses the pattern during the week. But she's far from finished. But she also gets bored on the days that I work the barrel pattern. Any suggestions? Maybe something that will help her get a little less scared of things (she was off the track and never grew up around cows or scary objects). She turned 6 this year.

I think if she works great at home you can probably work some drills once or twice a week a couple times and be good. My gelding is pretty patterned but likes to anticipate. We'll go ride in BHW hay field and then come up and trot through a couple times, or trot through a couple times and go condition in the field. We don't overdo it I don't think. The gal I haul with does about the same on her young one and rarely shows her good mare the pattern at home.

This ^^^^^  And you have just got to haul her more to different places so she can get used to all the new things around her, all part of getting her season

I have one that is at that stage.  I rarely work the actual pattern at home becuase he knows the pattern.  I ride out as often as possible and work on bending, flexing, giving in the ribs, etc.  I work the barrels but not the pattern.  Last year I took him to the same arena at least a half a dozen times and each time there were monsters in the arena, he could have cared less about the barrels.  Two races this year and he is HUNTING them and listening to me.  YAY.  I am still doing time only/exhibitions on him before the race because he still needs them - it seems to get him over that little "might be something that will eat me" in the arena before the actual race.  Mine is 6 this year too.  :) Good luck!

If I were you I would avoid the pattern with your mare and just work on getting her exposed to the stuff that scares her.
