We bought a 3-4 month old steer, who's mom died when he was about 2 months. they bottle fed him and of course he is eating grass and hay and they grained him a little. I bought him a few days ago, should I put him on some type of grain or calf manna? We have good quality hay and pasture. They said he was dewormed but he's pretty ribby and small. would it hurt to deworm him again? maybe with pelleted type or go ahead with injectable?

I would deworm him...are you wanting to butcher him later? I think they have a calf creep pellet. I know they have lamb as that is what I am feeding my boys bums. My husband said years ago when they kept a steer around to fatten they fed COB.

14% creep for standard growth feeding or a Fat Calf feed if your wanting to grow/fatten for slaughter.

I agree, worm him again. We use pour on. Lice can keep a calf in poor condition too.
And you should be able to find a 14% complete or pellet at your feed store. Calves that small and young arent able to get enough nutrition from grass or hay. Usually their growth is stunted and health can be poor. Start him slow and keep a little hungry until he is use to the feed. And let him eat as much grass and hay as he will.
Good luck!

We always start our bottle babies on Purina Calf Startena and then switch to Purina Growena. I think it's called Amplicalf Starter and Grower now though.

Any good quality calf feed made for baby calves, im not sure what your area offers, we get ours through our feed and sumplment suplyer for the feedlot.

Also id put him back on milk even if its just once a day. All my bottle calves look w ounderful. I never seen them before the calves on moma are weened. They get weened the same day and put in the same pens as the others and from that point on are treated the same.

Also if you get a great calf feed he should not need much hay if any. They only have so much room for food, so you want the most valabule to get in there before they are full. Mine are outside with the horses on grass fulltime as well, but the do fill up on thier grain (that the horses cant get to)

Give him an injectable wormer. It's been proven time and time again pour one do nothing. If I had pour on to get rid of, I'd give it to him orally.

He's going to get butchered later.

We always fed wet cob to fatten up but they were alot older when that time came. I've bottle fed two calves before and I just don't have time for it right now. If I can just get him a good starter or grower that should be good enough I'm hoping. How long do you feed that for?
In a few weeks he'll be turned out with a older heifer to start grazing a bigger pasture full of nice orchardgrass, patsturegrass mix and vetch. He's eating hay and grass very well right now.

I do have pelleted dewormer on hand, is that effective at all?

We bought a bottle calf last year and when he was that age we put him on Stocker Grower from TSC. He fatten right up with it.

I think that's what I got today at TSC... here is the link http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/purinareg%3B-4-squarereg%3B-stocker-grower-supreme-cattle-feed-50-lb

I'm a little confused on the tag how much to feed, but I think 1% of their body weight is what I got out of it. darn tag was sewn into the bottom and i couldn't read it all.

we dont feed our bottle babies hay until they are bigger..like 500 pounds. they dont digest it as well and dont get much from it.
