We have been dealing with abcsess's on a horse since December.  First one blew right around Christmas, second was about 3 month ago and this last one was about 2-3 weeks ago.

The first 2 we were able to get cleared up pretty fast.  This last one is going to send me to an early grave.  Shoer was out 3 days after he blew it and said everything was good blah, blah, blah.  We have had some unusually moist weather and that isn't helping things at all.

He is going to vet tomorrow to have some x-rays done to make sure there isn't anything else going.  With an abcess like this what could be hanging around inside?  I have never had one like this so what are the possiby things that could be going on?

I am glad you are going to get radiographs.  Some times the infection can occur deep inside the hoof and even affect the coffin bone.  Get a look at what you are dealing with.  It may require systemic antibiotics/culturing of the bacteria, further coring out/curetting of the abscessed area etc.

By getting the pictures you will be able to see what is really going on.

it could be laminitis. That is how one of our broodmares started. She would get tender footed for about a week or 2 every year and then was fine. Turns out she had insulin resistance and it hit her when she was about 14. I think we owned her for 6yrs before she had a full  blown episode. She would abcsess over and over and never would get better-sold her to a home that was better prepared to take care of her. After about 3 yrs of drought, the grass eventually got to her...or it was just her time either way. Good luck, hope you find it is something easy to fix.

Has it occurred on the same foot every time?

That is very frustrating. I agree with above post maybe strong round of antibiotics. Hopefully you will be able to see something in radiograph

I just posted about the same thing! So frustrating, we have already gone through a round of antibiotics and did x-rays.. Have never dealt with an abcess this long.

I am sorry you are dealing with this! One of my geldings just had a terrible abscess that took 5 full weeks to completely blow out. It came out in both heel bulbs then a small spot next to his frog and then finally almost all of his sole sloughed off. You could see trenches in his hoof from the abscess. It was crazy. Since it kept popping and draining my vet wasn't in a rush to do x rays quite yet. I also did not want them to try and dig it out. I knew it had to pop eventually so i just (anxiously) waited for it to come through on its own

My Tb Gelding 11 yrs old was an abcess nightmare. Everytime it rained He would stand in the muddy places in His paddock!!, Put Him on "Animal Element Detox" and He hasn't had one since and My Blacksmith loves His Hoofs . Good Luck

It's all about the amount of blood flow. The more blood flow you get to the absess the less inflammation and infection you will have.

You can treat it with anti biotics and isoxiprine(sp) VERY EXPENSIVE or with NitrOxide (THE)

This kept happening to my gelding on his back left foot! Finally sheared the heal. It was bad. Then took him for X-rays and found out he had a negative palmar angle. Poor unbalanced shoeing. He is doing great now that I found a super shoer!

We had one hang on for over 3 weeks. Went to the vet worried and he looked at it- then had him trot on concrete then right in front of our eyes it busted out!!

Have you been soaking? Is horse stalled or turned out? Soaking in Oxy-Clean and turn out I think is best. It may be a gravel working through his foot and will bust out the coronet band. Seems to take a while. :-\
