Location: Louisiana | Long story short, I've been experimenting with lasix. He's been fine without (or so I thought) for several runs. Well last night as soon as we come out the alley I knew. He coughed as soon as I pulled him up and was wheezing. Then, after a few minutes, he bled out both nostrils. Obviously I know to give lasix from now on and stop messing with what works! And start a round of antibiotics an give him time off.
But...I'm entered tonight also. I have lasix with me. How bad do you guys think it would be to run him tonight before hauling him home? I don't have a backup option. Do you think it cause MORE harm? This is a rodeo association I have money won and am somewhat on the bubble for the finals, not just some backyard barrel race. To run or not to run?? |

Location: South MS | I would call your vet since he knows your horse and get his opinion on how bad it would be on him to run tonight and then rest him. Since he just bled last night he would be more prone to bleeding tonight even if on lasix.
Personally I would try to find a horse to borrow. I am sure someone would be willing to lone you something
I run mine on lasix and dex as we bleed through lasix so I know the frustration you are dealing with.

Location: Louisiana | Thanks guys. I really didn't want to run him. I talked to my vet and he said draw out. Good news is I found a horse to borrow. Thank goodness they have a youth rodeo this morning so my fiancΓ©'s team roping partner had his little girl and her horse with him. Thank goodness for good friends!! |

Location: Kansas | Glad you found something else to run. I know I personally couldn't run one that just bled. In fact, I missed my last chance to make URA Finals in 2011 because Chance bled 4 days before the last rodeo and I vetted out. Turns out I missed finals by $300, which was about what 4th place paid at that rodeo. |

Location: Louisiana | Thanks again! I'm annoyed with myself for running him without lasix... He hasn't had any bleeder symptoms in 2 years. Ugh!! It all started by going to 2 day rodeos and running day 2 without bc he wasn't drinking a ton of water between runs and I felt bad giving him more. He did fine so I thought I'd back him off. 2 weeks ago I made 2 runs after riding a super dusty warmup pen in close to 90 degree heat, no signs of bleeding at all, or so I thought. Looking back to run #2, he bowed off the third. Last night poor thing just ran out of gas. He quit on the back side of the second and just coasted. I'm annoyed bc he was making a heck of a run. Flew in and smoked the first, and started to turn second awesome, then it was like he didn't power out of it like he normally does. I was still about a half second off the pace, might've been in the money if we'd ran the whole time!! Anyway, my vet is wanting to put him back on an herb that we had tried before in conjunction with Red Lung. He was a raving lunatic so I quit giving it to him and went to lasix. Vet thinks I should try the herb(can't remember the name) without Red Lung, bc he hasn't had any other horse react to it. So I'll start doing that along with his 3cc of lasix. Now I know to never run him without it again!! I can't handle seeing my baby like he was last night, he just put his down and made an awful wheezing sound trying to clear his airways. Freaked my fiancé out- he has never seen one bleed before. Plus me being upset didn't help matters. I'm glad I have BHW to offer up good advice!! |

Hindsight is always 20/20. I know I held my breath when I pulled Chance off lasix a couple years ago, but I had been backing it down a little at a time. When he made it through a huge dusty arena on labor day in 105 degree temperatures on 2 cc of lasix, I figured we were probably OK to go without, so two weeks later I ran without it. Holding my breath the whole time! LOL. |

 Go For It!
Location: Texas | I know people hate having to give the Lasix, but in reality, it's a few cc's a couple of times a week. There are people who take Lasix daily for years. Bleeding is far harder on horses than the Lasix is. And if they drink good then you should never have an issue from giving it to them.
Good luck!

I agree with this, every time they bleed your compromising their health further, I give mine 3cc at most in summer but I only run him in necessary or bigger shows. Unless you're having them scoped every time you pull them off lasix you don't know if they're really not bleeding. I know plenty of silent bleeders, as mine was. |
