Ok, long shot, anyone feed bananas before competition to increase energy and help reduce acid in the stomach? If I'm lucky and someone has, how many? Somewhere I read 2-3 per feeding.

What's wrong with Gastrogard and alfalfa?

If it's just maintenance you're into, 60-80 ccs of Maalox really works about 1.5 hrs out.

How do you get the bananas into your horse?

believe it or not, I offered one to my old man and he ate it, I peeled it for him but they say they'll eat it with the peel on too. I tried with some of the other horses and they played with it and would nibble on it, maybe after some time they'll eat it. I guess nothing is wrong with them but I like to find the most natural way and was intrigued to try bananas after I read about it. everyone, not on pasture, already gets alfalfa on a regular basis.

I have never heard of bananas, but there has been scholarly articles published in journal of veterinary medicine about papaya curing ulcers, and it also supposedly is a natural wormer. Mine all get about 1/4 cup of papaya puréed daily as they like the taste and I can give them their supplements in it.

I have one horse that will eat all fruit, and corn on the cob

Oh thanks, I might try that.... you can buy the pill form of papaya(I used to eat it everyday for my stomach issues) from a natural food store, would that work?

I have a very good friend that gives a banana at every feeding + aloe Vera juice as a maintenance/preventative. I gave one to my horse & he LOVED it!

You can also get papaya juice from http://www.stomachsoother.com/  My horse loved it and never had any trouble with him eating it. Pretty affordable. I would buy a case at a time and it is good for dogs and cats even humans.

I've heard of apple cider vinegar and even the Formula 1 Noni helping with ulcers?

Anyone know anything about that? I've never heard of bananas either!

I've had reflux issues in the past, and bananas actually exacerbated my discomfort. I don't know how they would affect a horse, but since it made it worse for me, I would be hesitant to try it for my horse.

I would stick to UlcerGard or Ranitidine.

Ever heard of the BRAT diet? When your stomach is upset and you are vomiting or have diarrhea you are supposed to eat Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Why wouldn't the same be for your horse when their stomach is upset?

Because horses are not humans ;-)

But really, anything acidic and actually gluten aggravate my heartburn/reflux/indigestion. So, the applesauce and toast alone would have me with a gut on fire.

I'm really intrigued by this idea... My Gelding has ulcers but is alergic to a lot of supplements used for ulcers as well as alfalfa. I'm always interested in natural diets. This is worth researching for sure.

"horses are not humans" could also be applied toward you previous comment.

If you drink a glass of milk or eat peanut butter with the banana it will help your body process the sugar more slowly and then prevent the build up of acid in your stomach.

look into the papaya, like Cheryl was stating. After reading more about that, it looks like the better option.

I would think you would need a lot of pills to equal the concentration.

I buy papaya puréed by the case in a natural health food store I order it in.

It tastes very good.
