How many of you have been without a truck and trailer while having horses?  How long did you go like that?  How did you make it work?

That's the only thing keeping me from getting my horse down here.  I don't even know of any events I would haul him to, but the thought of not having a way to get him around in an emergency or if a vet was needed is a serious issue.  My friend just brought her horse out to California and she doesn't have a truck or trailer.......got me thinking but ultimately I don't think I could do it.

Thoughts?  Experiences?

Could you get a buddy to haul your horse down there for you?

I get rather panicky if I don't have a truck or a trailer - due to the event of a vet emergency - thank heavens I have a bunch of friends close by who I could call.

If you have friends that haul to events I'm sure they wouldn't mind having someone to split fuel with. And in the event of a true vet emergency, you could always do a farm call. Not having a truck and trailer would not be nearly as bad on me as not having a horse at all. I would have to find a way to make it work.

I didn't have one for 5 years (at least not one I felt comfortable actually hauling in, it was an old, cheap, if I have an emergency I'll take it type of trailer).

The first two years I was boarding across from a huge park with trails, so I could at least ride there.  When we bought our house, riding got a heckuva lot more boring.   It was really hard to motivate myself to go ride when all I could do was mosey around the pasture.  Now I have a truck and trailer and can go wherever I want :)

I have a truck and a trailer.. I don't have a 5th wheel hitch... So I borrow my friends bumper pull to haul both she and I to events because she has no truck but has a trailer. LOL
We make it work...
In Terms of a vet emergency I pay the extra 25 dollars to have them come to me... It makes check ups less stress full on my gelding too.
I only have two now tho instead of about ten head. With two i'm comfortable having no hitch, if I still had ten I'd be trying a little harder to find a hitch... JMO

I did it for 5 years. I did have an exceptional group of friends that let me use their truck and trailer in the major emergency but I always just hopped in with someone when I wanted to go places (and obviously paid my part in expenses).

Just make sure you know of at least 1 person who will let you use their outfit just in case it is a weekend and you need to haul an emergency to the vet instead of them coming to you ... which is precisely what happened to me.

I was without a horse trailer for about 6 months. I had just graduated college and was waiting to afford something.

Fortunately, I was boarding with an amazing retired couple who gave me permission to use their horse trailer when I needed it. That got me by for the time being.

My farrier does not come to me, so it would be a real problem if I didn't have a truck/trailer. (And my farrier is good and I need him so I'm not going anywhere else!!!)

For the first time in 18 yrs I don't have a trailer! I was without a truck for a few weeks then got one but on the hunt for a small trailer and it seems impossible to find what I want. I'm just at the mercy of depending on friends to bring me to shows etc. I think it'll be this way for a while until I find one. I've been enjoying riding @ home and not being worried about competing.

I haven't had a truck/trailer since high school. I'll tell yah I get itchy cause I don't know anyone who can haul me. I finally bit the bullet and got a tow rig a week or so ago, getting a horse trailer next week :) I just can't do it anymore lol! I want the freedom of going over to a friends house when they are doing a play day, or hauling to a trainer if I want to.

When I was in Phx I was lucky enough to either board near an arena or whoever I boarded with would sometimes haul me around for gas and such.

Also who's your friend? o.O

I'm from Phx and just moved my horse to california too! Lol.

I didn't have one for a lot of years. We have vets here that will do a farm call. There was a point at which I needed to haul to a University- I had to wait a day, but I was able to find someone to take him for me. I paid their fuel. Thankfully he was mostly out of the woods.

I have my own truck and trailer now. I don't really want to be without one in the future, but it is possible to do so... you just can't really show unless you have someone who can haul you. I'd just make sure the vet and shoer come out to you.

When my husband and I were first starting out we had an old truck about ready to hit the dust. When it finally did at 340,000 miles we just had a trailer that sat and ended up going a year without a truck. At this time I was in college-had not gotten into barrel racing or anything. We had some young horses that we spent our time trail riding around our property and other property.

Never really had any issues. Vet would come to us, farrier came to us and our friends delivered our hay.

Would I go back to that? No, but you do what you must to survive with horses and we made do without any horrible situations happening as a result.

Not sure if you would know her....she moved her horse from Utah to the LA area and she does dressage.

If I could approved for a truck loan I'd have a rig already!  :/

I doubt you would need the truck and trailer for an emergency...they only get hurt before the most important race that you pre-entered.

Many years ago, when I was a young child, we did not have a trailer. We rode to and from the shows, parades and fairs. Sometimes 2-3 hours, ride at the show and then ride home again. Just did it and that was what we had to do. Was very thankful though when my parents bought our first trailer and have never looked back. I also remember a lot of sharing trailer rides with other 4-H kids. Everyone just helped everyone out. Hopefully you have some good friends that are willing to haul you to shows and would help you out in an emergency. Hang in there. This to shall past and before long you will be able to have that truck and trailer you want

Oh okay! I thought she moved from AZ to CA! I was like oh hey what a coincidence! But yeah I wouldn't know any dressage people for sure lol.
