I have a horse who, in the middle of eating her grain, will stop to lick the pipe in front of her feed bin. They have a mineral block to lick off of. Why would she lick the pipe? She's not bored. Only does it during feeding. Needs more saliva or a deficiency of some sort?

Our cribber does that, will leave off in the middle of eating his grain to crib......not sure why, I think it is a habit now.

I had one that would lick the trailer fender if you gave him a treat. I never saw him do it when he was eating his grain, but he did it every time he got a treat at the trailer.

does he have access to fresh water while he's eating? I have a wood chewer. he'll bite the wood when you're getting ready to bring him his food, I've never seen him full on crib though. he'll start biting on the metal piping on his stall during his meal and after if he has old water or no water while he eats. I always thought he was just weird but maybe there is something to it. if he can get a swig of water while he eats he doesn't do it at all, but he's picky about it he wants it cold out of the pump. lol

I have a couple of them.....one in particular. Have access to mineralized salt block, a full tank of water, gets a vitamin/mineral supplement and almost 24/7 turnout. Yet she especially does it while eating her feed or treat. The metal pipe or the aluminum horse trailer if she is tied to it.

I don't think she is missing anything nutritionally but maybe a few brains cells???

I wonder if there is something about the metal that helps with digestion? Or changes the flavor of the feed? I wonder if ulcers and this is something they do to help with the acid?

Interesting.
