| My husband and I are wanting to take a short like three four day vacation. We live in central Texas and want to drive, we were thinking like the coast of Alabama or something. But we don't know anything about the area. We both live to fish lay on the beach and just have a good time. But we aren't big on commercial crowded areas. We would rather have something a little off the grid and just quiet easy going. Any ideas or advice is appreciated!! |

It's not tropical but have you checked out Estes Park, CO?? We're staying in a cabin.

My friend stayed here and LOVED it, you can do fly fishing, have your own cabin with kitchen your own personal hot tub etc. I can't wait! They have super reviews and it's only an hr from Denver.

Location: Deep South | I live on the AL coast, we get a lot of LA and TX visitors that seem to enjoy it. The main places(cities) to stay are Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Fort Morgan. If you don't like crowds I definitely wouldn't book in Gulf Shores, that's the most touristy of the three.
Fort Morgan is quiet and remote and a little bit of a drive from anything. There's like one restaurant and one convenience store down that side, but it's beautiful.
Orange Beach is kind of in between. There's things to do, but not as crowded as the main beach in Gulf Shores. |

Location: MS | Gulf Shores/Orange Beach, AL are highly commercialized. If you want to go to that area I would suggest Fort Morgan. It's on the Peninsula west of Gulf Shores. It's mostly beach houses & a couple of hotels. Very low key. It's been a couple of years since I went there but I believe there's only one restaurant and maybe 2-3 stores down that way. So, if you want to go out to eat, you would have to go to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
My favorite is Pensacola Beach. It's somewhat commercialized but not like Gulf Shores. But enough that there is plenty to do and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Hope that helps some. |

Location: No place better...East TN!! | Pensacola Beach :) my mom lives there & we just went for a short visit in June. You can stay on the Sound Side of Pensacola Beach and enjoy no waves, nice big boats to look at & quiet fishing. You can walk across the street to the Gulf side & get all the waves & sea shells you'd like :) Fort Pickens is a really neat place to visit while you're there & you can't go without seeing the Aviation Museum & the lighthouse! Maybe while you're there you can see the Blue Angels also....they flew back into town our last night there & did a little show for everyone before heading back to base....it was really neat to see! There are amazing restaurants....Flounders is a really good one. It's not overrun with tourists there either which is why we enjoyed it so much. Everyone is super friendly too :) |

Location: The South | Another vote for Pensacola! We drove through there on our way to Destin one year and it looked beautiful. I have to recommend using Tripadvisor if you don't already. I love that app when we're traveling!! Found some really good places to eat that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. |

Location: North MS | Waveland, MS is the now least developed area on the coast. Due to the hurricane a lot of stuff was not built back. Not a lot to do there other than fish, but still within driving distance of the other areas to go out to eat and such. It doesn't look bad or anything, if you walk in the woods (such as I do for work) you still find stuff from people homes blown around. Both sad and funny- I found a dvd of "around the world in 80 days". But in regards to the rest of the MS coast- developed! Lots of traffic. I went on vacation this past year to orange beach- everything from Mobile across to Orange beach is developed and full of tourist traps. We drove to pensacola to a fishing outfitter. |
