I think I am dealing with a SI injury and not a torn hamstring. We are seeing the Vet this week. Please let me know your experiences. I have done a lot of research. In the last four months,I have done massage, ground work everything I have kept her moving. Thank you, I am worried. WENT TO THE VET ON THURSDAY. TEQUILA HAS THE TIPS OF A COUPLE OF VERTEBRAE RIGHT BEHIND THE WITHERS BROKEN. STRAINED LIGAMENT ON EACH SIDE OF HER SPINE. TURN OUT FOR TWO MONTHS. THEN SHE WILL BE READY TO GET BACK TO WORK. I am so relieved.

We are going through the opposite. Had her SI injected to later find out that it's her hamstring. Very slow process of healing. Good luck and hope you get more answers.

what were the signs/symptoms that led you to the si/hamstring diagnosis?

Well, not wanting to pick up right hind, soreness in hip area. had a vet look at her could not find exact area of soreness. injected the whorl bone area not SI. I had deep tissue massage done on her, the girl found area of soreness right on top of hip. The soreness went away with massage, hydro, brace. Long trotting. I had her adjusted 3 weeks ago sore in right hip after adjustment. She is very tender in her back behind wethers. I have done no riding in the last 3 weeks just massage, hydro, bute, sore no more and hand walking.

She does go out in her pelvis, but would the pain last this long?

This issue started when a farrier lifted her right hind up too far. I told him he was hurting my horse when he lifted up her lag.

Wish I had some advice - been dealing with the same problem for the past couple of months... I'm also not riding... Chiro, massage, ground work, etc etc... Her SI issues make the entire horse sore... Not sure if she will ever come back... :((

Ours had a fractured pelvis and never truly healed, but it sounds like you know the cause of your injury.

I have a horse who was mis diagnosed for about a year - finally took him back to a vet I had used in the past who does osteopathy work- within 5 minutes she found that he had tore a si ligament - he had hit his hip and tore muscle off the hip - his hip was dropped on right side- he always carried himself to the left and had a real hard time with right lead- ( still don't know how he did this - but he did) I don't think most vets or chiropractors can pick up the torn si ligaments w/out expensive mri- body scan etc. anyhow every vet I had taken him to told me to keep riding him to bring the muscle back ( and he saw several) $$$$$- she caught this as soon as she checked his si said he should NOT be adjusted and to stay off for 3 months NO exercise at all and keep him as quiet as possible- I bought theraplates that day and started theraplating 3x a day on him and did as she said- I massaged always doing what I could to help the circulation- 6 weeks later I seen a huge improvement- I insisted she see him again and she was amazed at the improvement- she had me start hand waliking for a month and rechecked then adjusted and then I went and had si injected ( from a very reputable si injection vet) that is a tricky place to inject so spend the extra and go where they have all the equipment they need to see exactly where they are injecting and someone who has a good rep for this IMO anyhow adjusted that same day- and every 3 weeks after for about 4 months now we do every 6 weeks- its a lot of $ and time but its a difficult injury to rehab properly - but I can say its all been worth it he is sound 1d and prorodeo horse winning checks today-1 more thing I pulled all his shoes we are barefoot he can run on any ground with no slips when others have fallen and slipped and slidded all over the place which probably causes much of these si injurys - hope this helps

I just got done dealing with the same issue. My horse had been sore before I bought him and the old owners injected his knees (which did not need to be done) When I got the horse and rode him he was pretty stiff to the left, would swing his butt on the back side of the barrels and refused to hold his front feet up for more than a few seconds. He would jerk his legs away from you when you held his left front up and that is what made the old owners think he was having knee problems. I took him to the vet about 6 weeks ago and the vet held up his front left leg while his assistant pushed the hips the opposite direction and my horse had a huge reaction and practically drug the vet across the parking lot to get away. The vet then did the tail pull test and my horse had no strength to hold himself still. Then, he ran a pen down his back and over his butt and my horse about collapsed. That 5 minute deal confirmed that me horse was "out" in the SI and had extreme whorl bone soreness as a secondary issue. It was determined that my horse was out because of a bad fall on some ice a few months ago.

The vet put my horse under sedation and did a very complex chiro adjustment and then he had to be on stall rest for 2 weeks, after those two weeks I took him back and had his whorl bones injected and then another 10 days stall rest.

On Saturday I was allowed to ride him again. When I asked my horse to stop from a lope he sat his butt in the ground! He has never done that before so I think he feels better. His dropped hip has gone away and he is striding a lot deeper in the back and engaging his hind end better than he did before I had him worked on.

Lil-Pony I am happy you got your horse fixed. Will you have ongoing maintenance with your horse? Because of the injury

The vet doesn't seem to think so. He has the horses be on stall rest for that long to try and prevent having to do the procedure as a maintenance thing. My horse strained his hamstring a few years ago and the vet thought that is a possible reason the whorl bones were sore but thinks they had more to do with the SI soreness. I took a video of the adjustment and it is probably something you have never seen before. It is intense. If you would like more info abotu it just PM me :)

We've visited back and forth and I have had the same procedure done to pretty much all of my horses at one time or another... The only one who couldn't hold her adjustment was one who had multiple soundness issues that caused her to be retired. After this adjustment I've only had great results! A big plus is that the vet's wife & daughter are both well know barrel racers, so he understands barrel horses!

I have had the SI injected on a couple and sometimes it can take 2 injections .They get really sore ,some don't want to turn or work . If they inject it then this also helps : cold water 10 min twice a day ,a good chiro ,even bute for 4 days will help  with soreness as it is a healer but no more than 4 days as it is hard on the stomach . I usually give them 2 weeks off but depends on how sore they are even after the injection . I have had good luck with injecting them .
