Member Posts: 21	So I have this horse that I have been working with for about a year. When I first got him he was not being handled and was starved to death. He is super sweet, loves attention, and is really smart. He honestly loves working in the arena more than going on a trail ride. He's a son of Mr Jess Perry out of a First Down Dash mare. Nothing bother him, and is the best horse I could ask for. It was a few months before I really started him on barrels due to how bad of a condition he was in. I haven't had any problems with him until now, because I'm asking him for more speed. He is fine during slow work, but when I ask him to go faster he just locks up in his mouth. I have tried many different bits with many different mouthpieces and he hasn't liked any of them. He does the same thing with every bit. (The jr cowhorse is what he deals with the best) I know that sounds so ignorant, but at the time I honestly thought that the bit was the problem. I just don't feel confident enough to run him because I pretty much have to man handle him around the barrels which I HATE doing. So now I have come to the conclusion that maybe he is in pain somewhere? (He has had his teeth done a few months ago) He doesn't seem to show any sign of pain, but he is super tough and very pain tolerant. When he runs he does tend to root his nose up. I know that he can be an awesome horse, but I have run out of ideas on what to do. Sorry for the long story, I am just in need of help!

Owner of a ratting catting machine Posts: 2258	There's lots of things that could be going wrong here. I also just had a puzzle horse come to my house. The first thing I did was get him to a really good vet that did a full lameness, blocked joints and did x rays. Checked him head to toe. Took care of some maintenance issues, injected his hocks. Treated his ulcers and got him eating better. Then we were off to the equine dentist and got his mouth redone. Then we were off to the chiropractor for adjustment. He still wasn't riding well in a bit. At all. I decided to sell him. Was frustrated and out of time. He's a super gentle and sweet boy, and I just hopped on him with a halter one afternoon. He rode around so well in it, I went to the pattern. He loped through it like a champ. Turns out he's a certified hackamore horse. He hates bits! Don't know why, but I'm not picky. He likes a hackamore, so we go with that. After all the care, he shined up just like a new penny. Neatest horse ever. I would start at the lameness vet and go from there.

Expert Posts: 2097 Location: Deep South	I agree with potato chip... Just because he's locking up and fighting the bit doesn't mean this is mouth related at all, that could just mean that's how he's choosing to tell you he's in pain. I would also get him to a good lameness vet.
