| Just a brag post...My daughters horse was real chargy and would just push through the bit and stroll right past 1st barrel, so after him spending 2 weeks at a friends place she said we needed to slow him down, so we went back to just the basics and slow barrels for 4 or 5 months, im talking 5D times if that.
Well this weekend we went to a jackpot like usual and her exhibitions went the same as always but when she started her run for the open I knew instantly she was letting him go. She gave him free rein to 1st and for the first time he rated hard and smoked the turn, then as usual he pushes off hard with his long legged stride and head high lope to the 2nd and turns it fast and smooth like he always does, but this time leaving 2nd I see my daughter kicking him, I was thinking what the he!! is she doing? Well she lined the horse up a little wide and he needed a couple extra strides but he did great around 3rd with what he had to work with and then she smooched and hissed him home, this is the first time Ive seen him lower his head to actually run. I couldnt believe the time, her first ever 2D time on a self trained horse!
So proud and relieved! |

| Oh yeah...So after the run the first thing I say to her is "Who needs the 3D?"
I was expecting more of a gradual progression not this giant leap, but I also know she will have to back him back down again at times. The joys of seasoning a horse and rider... |

| I do. I need the 3, 4, and 5D-sometimes the 6D if it is a big enough race! :) Glad your daughter had a nice run! |

| Thanks for the replies.
I cant wait to see how this plays out, we also have a 5 yo cutting bred mare that should be on the pattern in 4-6 weeks. |

| Welp, we needed the 3D this weekend. The horse spooked at observers and horses on the 2nd barrel friday night, so today she kept it slow, slow to the 1st a nice very controlled lope to 2nd and clean turn, but the horse slipped while pushing away that cost some time and 3rd looked great.
So she landed in the 3D crack, disappointed? Not even close, very grateful for a clean run. |
