Location: Middle Tennessee | My horse is very ratey and hard turning. However, on his first he sometimes drops too soon and I can't get him past it. He doesn't usually knock but will either stall or rear up. I was running in an o-ring combo. The only other issue he has is that he likes to get away from me in the alley and take off before he's set up with the o-ring combo. I can't get his nose tipped in going to the 1st with it. Any other time he is VERY light mouthed. I put him in the Martha Josey Million Dollar Bit so that I was back in control in the alley and going to the 1st and he was perfect. He didn't try to drop in it. Except, on 2 and 3 he shakes his head. What bit is enough to have control/get him to tip his nose going to 1, but light enough for a light mouthed horse? |

Location: Middle Tennessee | He just had his teeth checked last month. I know he's only shaking his head because the bit is too much for him. He doesn't do it in any other bit. I may try a hack but not sure I'll have enough control with it. |

Have you tryed a bit with a chain mouth, I had a horse that hated everything I put in his mouth tryed a chain mouth and no more head shaking. And another thing too my horse hates alot of contact with his mouth and he will shake his head if I make to much contact. |

Location: Middle Tennessee | I tried a short shank chain mouth gag bit and he ran way past his first which he has never done. He had his mouth gaped wide open. I really thought he would have liked a chain mouth. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | And another thing I was thinking, make sure the bits are not pinching and I like a thick nylon string for curbs on certain bits. Like someone just said on here maybe try a leather curb. |

Check out The Tack Stop, there is all kinds of nice bits on there. Thats where I get most of my bits if I need something different to try. |

| I've been down this road. I finally came to the conclusion my left and right hand placement/pressure were not consistent with each other - hence why we turned better right with some bits vice versa. If you like the new bit, maybe focus on where your hands are on your left turns and keep them the same as when you turn right. I don't know if that's it, but just an idea? |

The chain mouth is a Molly Powell that I bought from The Tack Stop. |

Location: Middle Tennessee | Rode him tonight in a few different bits. We did figure eight's around two barrels at opposite ends of the arena. I loved him in a hack but when he was "done" he would take his head from me and do as he pleased. So, stuck with the Josey bit and changed from a tiedown to a bonnet and he was pretty good. Not dragging his hind end as much as usual, but that could be that we weren't going very fast. Opinions? |
