| I saved a horse that had really bad arthritis in his hocks at only 5 years old. I left him turned out as much as possible, injected both upper and lower joints, injected Adequan, did not run him with shoes. I got pregnant and basically turned him out for a little over a year and to mine and my vets surprise, he is sound!!!! We xrayed him a his hocks have fused. Be patient, take very good care of her, work closely with your vet. You can have a positive outcome. Good luck! |

Injected upper and lower (previously had only injected lowers) and shes a much happier horse now. Also started her on Exceed 6-way as she wasnt on any feed thru joint supplement.....jury is still out if its helping any. And I was giving her and will continue to give her Acteyl D Glucosmine shots. Also, BOT hock wraps before and after races and prior to some rides

Does having hind shoes on a horse affect their hocks?

Location: Sunny So Cal | A good joint supplement will help with the injections. I use THE JointPLUS as my daily supplement and then I do injections. I'm starting to use Legend and Adequan as well. |

| I've had remarkable results with Tildren. It will treat whole body and seek out spots that need help without injecting. |

| I would get a hair analysis done. Then you will know exactly what the horse needs to heal. |

| The lower hocks if they are causing you trouble eventually they will fuse. Also when they are fusing the more you work one the quicker they fuse. Some will not fuse on there own, but once they fuse, the pain from that will go and they will be sound again.

If you want to talk true numbers--few horses actually fuse. If they fuse on their own or via standard injections you're very lucky. Most need surgical drilling, Tildren or the like to fuse them successfully.
My husband was discussing the very topic with a client this weekend. He said the thing to realize it's the horse's job that necessitates the need for injections. Injections only beget more injections if you continue to do what you did to cause the discomfort in the first place.
Also following injections, acupuncture or chiropractric treatement works wonders in prolonging your injections by eliminating secondary soreness. caused by sore hocks Heal the whole horse and you get more bang for your buck. |
