Location: North of where I want to be | I am looking for ANY input on how you deal with this. My SO has a beagle mix who recently has gone NUTS!! He seems to have major separation anxiety. He is used to being crated when we are gon but he recently has taken to injuring himself to get out of his crate when we are gone. I am looking into a Thundershirt & scheduling an appointment with Kathy George. I would love to hear what works for you, I am quite desperate. |

| I would like to know too. I recently acquired a little stray dog that my daughter HAD to keep that goes bonkers if my daughter leaves. I bought a nice crate put chew toys or a bone in her crate if we have to leave.. left radio on. Other dogs in the house too. Somehow she manages to get out of her crate and destroyed my house! Goes after the house plants first ... shreds them , then goes after my couches. Ripped a few cushions up pretty good. I cant keep her outside, she jumps the fence everytime and we live in town. So she will literally pace around the front yard and jump at the front door to get back in. Shes so attached to my daughter the dog will whine and whine if she cant be with her. School starts next week. Im just not sure what im going to do! |

just a squirt down your finger, let them lick it up. It doesn't totally knock them out but relaxes them. |

A lovely border collie was dumped at my workplace last Fall. Pretty female and she was very shy. It took several people almost two months to catch her. One of the managers wanted her and took her home. He had no experience with border collies -- but had owned many other dogs (house dogs). Anyway - on first day he left her in his house she destroyed it.... tore all blinds off all windows. Chewed door frames to pieces on front and back doors.... gnawed on wood furniture legs, etc... Destroyed some upholstered furniture (shreds).... even chewed on kitchen cabinet doors that she managed to get open. A catastrophe. She knocked everything on shelves and tables onto floors -- she must have been a busy flying gnawing furry nonstop for 6 hours. He was flabbergasted.. thousands of dollars of damage. This dog - per the vet - was less than a year old. I bet money she did the same at her previous "home" and that is why she got dumped. Very sad. This gentleman had to get rid of her ASAP... she is at some farm in the country and is a total outside dog, but we hear she is still somewhat nuts... fortunately she is in a very, very rural area. As much as I like animals -- one like this would HAVE TO GO. Not going to risk all of my possessions, home and arrange my life around trying to cope with the Tasmanian Devil. |

I agree with you! This dog is perfectly fine when we are home. A little restless when my daughter is gone but she just attaches herself to one of us thats home and hangs out. Ive never seen a dog just attach herself to a child like this! The timing of this pup showing up in my front yard is beyond anything I can explain. .. lets just say my daughter was in a horribly sad state of mind when the dog showed up. Skinny and paws blistered up. I wanted to take her to the pound the next day. I wasnt ever planning on taking another dog.. already have 3. Broke my heart when I told my kid the dog hade to go ... her crying and storming off ugh.... I was sitting on my couch and had my face in my hands feeling horrible! This darn dog came up and squeezed her head into my lap and just stared at me wagging her little nub of a tail... needless to say.. shes still here. Lol! Dont know where she came from or what happened to her but shes become very protective of my home and us. Im hoping we can work on her anxiety stuff .. ive reinforced her crate door so she cant escape anymore. |

| Our Beagle, who came from a shelter, is a complete nut. I have no doubt why he was there.
We have tried: Thundershirt, homeopathic remedies, different crates, Prozac, ten different training techniques... The list (and cost) goes on and on. He destroys the house if you leave him alone.
So for the first two years I took him to work with me everyday. He had to go in the kennel when we went to church, dinner, etc., I started putting him in an outdoor kennel this year when I am gone and he seems better. I think the consistency of the schedule and having stuff to look at is helpful to him. The barn cats come visit him, which I know he likes.
Over time he has settled down a bit. We can leave him for about 20 minutes alone in the house and he seems to like his outdoor kennel. I doubt he will ever be completely over it but time with our family seems to be helping. |

One of my males was fine with his crate until one day he decided when I left that he would pull all the bars in and wedge his head between the remaining pieces . Big bloody mess. He would only do this when I left the dogs. Not sure why but he would go into total panic if left in that crate , drooling , licking , screaming , barking and finding a way OUT.
I tried leaving him loose in the house after that and he hasn't been in a crate since and he as calm as can be. Sits in my living room window and sleeps and waits until I get home. Just a thought from personal experience.
I also leave some type of soundscapes music on for my dogs when I'm gone , all are crated but him .
There is also a plug in scent that dispenses through an outlet that I've heard people use. Foster & Smith has it in the calming section.

My border collie did the same thing. She was a stray, first day I left her at home in a large outside kennel. She was gone when I got home and it took 2 days to track her down. Tried leaving her in the house in a crate, she absolutely destroyed it and got out. I now leave her out in the house and she is happy as a clam.
My German Shorthair also has sever separation anxiety. Like if I walk outside and leave him in the house he starts panicking - checks every window looking for me, whining, etc. He has gotten better over time and did get quite a bit better after he was neutered. He is 6 now and I still wouldn't consider him a "normal" dog, but he has become much more manageable. The first few years were somewhat of a nightmare! He literally showered with me for the first few months I had him because he wouldn't let me out of his sight and went to work with me everyday. |

Thats what this dog does. She goes into the bathroom with my daughter and will just set there while she showers. Sleeps in her room but she sleeps in her crate with no problem. I have her locked in her crate now since my daughter is not home and she howled for about 5mins then got quiet and went to sleep! Thats some improvement there |

Location: Dubach, LA | Quit your job. Only go on trips where the dog can go too. Learn to do all your chores with the dog. Mower. Tractor. Horse. It worked for me. There is doggy Prozac.
