My good horse has started diving at second and third barrels.  Not every run, but if I make 2 or 3 runs in a day (2 run jackpot or something like that), he gets progressively worse.  He is the most broke horse I've rode, was started as a reined cow horse and made money, then went to the rope pen, now to barrels.  He is 7, I've had him on barrels for about a year.  He didn't start off diving, always ran very correct, started in the last few months hitting barrels.  I've tried lots of slow work, rolling him off the barrels, riding him by, etc. nothing has really cured it.

I'm on the fence with whether his hocks are sore because he stops hard and under himself, not front endy at all.  But I'm not sure how else to explain this change in his performance.  He's booked in to see the vet Saturday, but I'm just looking for other suggestions/opinions what it may be.....

Here's a video....this was his first run, the good one.  Still had to really hold him off second, the subsequent runs I couldn't.

Very good lameness vet told me hocks usually horses don't want to put their but in the ground so they'll blow a barrel going in and turning stifles usually horses don't want to launch so they'll run sit and turn but blow it taking off.

Neither of those sound correct for your situation. Here's my thinking

1. Riding: make sure your not asking this horse to set up and turn in anyway to soon. This includes but is not limited to dropping outside rein, sitting or looking at the barrel.
2. Shoulder: I only say this because I have a chores sore on his left shoulder that dives the 2nd barrel. Will come up lame after a day of making him lift that shoulder and lope straight lines with his nose tipped in.
3. Back/hips/kidneys: it may hurt to stay straight so he's doing for as short amount of time as possible.

I'm takin my gelding with this issue to my amazing lameness vet in the morning. I'll let you know what happens.
