There are thousands of these on the Kochia plants in my back yard! Are they black blister beetles?

I did and it looks like one. I just wanted to see in anyone else could confirm because I've never seen one in real life till today. Monday I'll take it to the extension office and have them check the ones I've caught. I am in Southwest colorado and they aren't common here.

The key to telling is the round head and triangular neck area. I can't tell from your pic though. Need a different angle

I caught a bunch in a jar. No I didn't touch them I just knocked them off the plants into the jar. Here is a better pic.

They have the necks and the long bodies .... What about the wings - I've read blister beetles have soft wings.

Yep they have soft wings too. I didn't touch them but saw them on one that was kinda squashed.

I would say it is blister bugs.  Many years ago when I lived in Belton our neighbors had alfalfa fields.  When they would start baling my back porch would be covered in the nasty little bugs.
