Seems like a dumb obvious question I know, but I have been out of the loop for years now. I have a race bred apha gelding that is started on barrels and would love to compete in apha events but I just dont know how it goes.  I have looked up the apha event calander but there isnt much that is close and I work a LOT. Am I supposed to travel around the state to hit as many shows as I can to get points or???

Can someone tell me more about all this, haha, and thank you in advance!

ETA, actually I dont see ANY apha events near San Antonio

You do need to show at APHA events to earn APHA points. Some open barrel races offer APHA classes. You can contact APHA directly to find some in your area.
You might check the APHA website or rule book, I read in a BHW mag that they were working on an incentive program starting next year. They also offer the PAC program where you can earn PAC points by competing at barrel races. It's not the same as APHA ROM points but it still shows up on his record.

You can also register your horse with the Pinto Horse Association and compete for points at Pinto Shows.

Personally, I would not go to a lot of expense and trouble to compete at an APHA show. All APHA shows are geared towards halter and western pleasure horses. So, the "footing" is terrible and all you are going to earn for your expense and trouble is points. (There are a few shows that are an exception but it is just a few).

On that note, I do try to make the one close APHA show if I have a horse ready. The show is just 20 mins. from my farm. I would not travel to any other show for the reasons listed above.

IMO, save your entry money for local jackpots, NBHA or IBRA shows. Maybe even some local rodeos.

The incentive program is up and going! You just enter approved barrel races as a side pot, from my understanding. Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program: http://www.apha.com/pbrip
My Texas geography is, well, I just know it's a big state south of me... lol! But, I looked quickly and saw shows in Collinsville and Fort Worth the next two weekends.
Can't wait to get my paint going!!!! Really looking forward to entering!

I WISH we had the PBRIP in my state. I would definately particpate. Hopefully, with the growing Barrel Racing interest, we will get the PBRIP going in a couple of years.
