Location: Kentucky | I just purchased this mare about 2 weeks ago. I need an extra set of eyes. This video shows the first time I asked her for more speed than a slow gallop. I rode her last night and sent her through a set and she did the same thing, this time after turning the second. She is 17, seasoned, and has shown signs of heat since I brought her home. I called her previous owner, who I know very well, and she said that she has never done this before, and that she may need her teeth looked at because it's been ages since she's been floated. She does shake her head when I'm working her off the pattern. Doesn't drop much feed. I'm open to suggestions. I know this isn't the best video, and I have to preface it by saying this is the first "run" I've made in about 3 years. She is a blast to ride, so I'm wanting to take care of her. Any other places I should check besides teeth?

I think so too. I had a few people say that she is "testing" me but I seriously don't think so. Her first is beautiful. She only does it on her second, and she braces on her third.
I'm calling dentist today to get her set up for an appt. Wasn't sure if anyone else could spot another underlining issue. |

| Most older finished horses don't test you; they just do their job. Did you get a vet check on this mare when you got her? I would get her to a lameness vet with a lameness locator and see what's up. I'd start with hock xrays, stifle X-rays, and front feet X-rays. Every single horse I've ever xrayed, from 5 years old and up, (I've xrayed a lot!) has had minimal to extensive bone change somewhere. At her age, something is probably tweaking and making her batty. To the vet! :)
Let us know. She looks nice! And kudos for not crashing after getting dashboarded, I'm not sure I would have managed that well! |

Yep, I agree. I don't think she is testing me.
No, I didn't get a vet check done. It's from someone I've known for years, and I know many people that have seen this horse run for years (she has been off for about a year or so). Plus I got a killer deal on her. Of course those reasons don't justify not getting a vet check, but it is what it is. I don't think it's anything career ending, but a lameness exam may be in order.
I'm shocked I was able to stay on and pull myself back up! I won't lie... I was incredibly sore for 3 days! |

| That's okay. When you know the horse and she's was a great deal, I admit, I have one I didn't vet either. It's taken me a few months, but I finally broke down and took her in. Her hocks were sore! An easy fix, and fthe vet trip to a good diagnostician fit right into the actual value of the mare. |

| Could you try her in the saddle she was run in before? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | After you get her checked out, teeth done go over all your tack to make sure no pinching, and check her bit to.. Good luck with her hope that you get it figured out, keep us up dated on what the vet finds. ETD; when was the last time she was ran befor you bought her? Did you try her out at your friends place on barrels?

Possibly, but I'd hate to bother the previous owner. I'll call the dentist and vet and get that checked out before I move to tack problems. My saddle seems to fit, and the previous owner gave me the bit, headstall, and tie down that she used on her. |

The owner quit riding all of her horses. She is selling everything. |

Hmm...I was wondering if there may have been some injury or behavior that required a layoff or pasture time. |

Location: Alabama | Check your saddle! Better yet just change saddles. I had a custom fitted saddle that we thought fit perfectly and the horse did almost that same move at the rate point of the second. He is also an older seasoned horse. Switched him back to his regular saddle and he went right back to working like nothing ever happened. Apparently that perfectly fitted saddle was grabbing his withers when he rated down and it freaked him out. |
