I have someone that may be interested in purchasing my mare as a broodie. I don't want to sell her, I love her to death, but financially it makes a lot more sense to sell her. I'm only selling with the condition that 1. I get first dibs if they don't want her anymore, and 2. I get to meet her babies.
QUESTION TIME! I've never sold a brood mare. I have never shopped for a brood mare. I have no idea what a brood mare is worth.
Here's her pedigree:

She's nicely built, is a palomino with a unique metallic sheen, and has a nice personality. Before she was injured she was crazy athletic.
What would you price her at?

Does she have a performance record or produce record?

Unfortunately broodmares who are not sired by well known stallions & out of well bred/producing mares aren't worth a whole lot. I'm sure it'd be a major financial loss but if you can even get 500-1000 I'd let her go if the home is right. She's a young mare & boarding her plus all other care for the rest of her life will cost you a fortune.

Yeah, I definitely don't expect to get my money out of her. I'm just not sure what exactly she IS worth. I'm not familiar with her bloodlines or ANY bloodlines for that matter. She's only 7 and has been lame since I bought her just after she turned 6, so no performance records. Selling will save me $2000+ a year.

If #1 on you list (first right of refusal) is a big deal to you, don't sell her. People agrees to this all the time, but rarely actually DO IT. I can't count the number of posts just on BHW where people are complaining the buyer didn't contract them before selling the horse.

Broodmares are a tough sell sometimes, especially one with no performance record, and one that doesn't have any "big names" on her papers. Her color will help her a lot. I would price her at $500.

Your conditions are really based on the person buying her.

She's pretty, I would say $750 and be willing to negotiate, that's how most people work in our neck of the woods!

I never actually had her up for sale. My BO told me she knew a couple people looking for a broodie and wanted to know if she could show her to them. She said they'd give her a good home.

You can trust your BO that it's a good home if it's people she trusts. Another route you could take is simply ask them what they'd be willing to give you then negotiate from there so you're both happy.

You really dont know if she's broodmare quality, shes never been proven in anything, so who ever buys her will be taken a chance on her. So I would see what they would offer for her, with her never having a baby and not proven, not rideable I would be open to all offers.

That's what I was thinking :) I wouldn't sell her to just anyone, but if she approves that's good enough for me.
