Location: Central Montana | I finally have come to realize that my mare isn't going make the level of reiner that I want and put her up for sale.
So, now I'm on the hunt for another reiner.
I have crummy luck. I bought a ready to show reiner last fall.....did everything right, had one of my vets look at the xrays....still have the email that says "I don't see anything I'd be concerned about." Well, vet missed two big red flags, the navicular and bone spurs. So now I have a super well bred, super well trained trail horse that I'm not sure what I'm going to do with. He has the most awesome personality, one of the best horses I've had. It is always the good ones.
I don't trust people enough to give him away and know that he'd be kept shod and injected if need be. I saw some results with Tildren but not as much as I had hoped. I'm also going to try Equibone but I have no illusions that he is going to be show sound again. Even though he is sound for light riding I might end up putting him down because I can't afford to keep one I can't use.
After buying him and now over $2,000 in vet bills since March I have been left with no choice if I want to be ready to show by next spring but to sell my other horse to buy a show horse one. Sometimes life stinks, and that is all we can do is suck it up and move on.

Location: USA | Sorry to hear about your guy with the navicular and bone spurs. There have been top barrel racers who's horses have spurs and navicular. Matter of fact, I know for certain a horse who won the WNFR a few years ago who has navicular. What I'm saying, with the right team, anything can be treated and taken care of. I've had horses with spurs on their hocks and I kept up with the maintenance and they're fine.
Those are 2 big things to miss on radiographs, what about a second opinion on them? Has your farrier seen the radiographs?

In all honesty, I can't afford to keep trying this and that after already spending $2,000 in just vet bills in a few months time (quoted $2,500 for an MRI knowing that it is would just give a better idea of how to treat but taking the chance that it isn't going to be any more treatable than what we are doing right now) knowing that if it doesn't work I will definitely be too broke to buy anything else for quite awhile. |

What level of reiner are you looking for? Non-pro? What shows? |

| As for your search, there is a facebook group, reining horses for sale, that seem to be 95% quality horses. I rarely see anything come across my feed that isn't out of a seriously competitive barn. |

I'm looking at local/in state shows. Definitely non pro. I have found one somewhat close by to go and take a look at, so, at least a lead. I've got to get my mare sold to make room for another one or plan on boarding for awhile until she sells. |

Location: Viola, IL | I have been dealing with tons and tons of issues with my mares feet. In July we thought nerving or retiring her were my only two options.
I contacted Jim Helfter at Advanced Biological Concepts. If you google you can find their webpage. He has been amazing. He recommended a bunch of their products to me, and when I confessed to him that my pocket book could barely afford one, he sponsored her and gave me the product for free.
I am happy to say, Dove is sound after two months. I know you're on your last options, and Jim has been great to me in my time of need. It might be worth calling him. :)

What issues were you having with your mare's feet that the products helped with? |

Location: Viola, IL | She has negative palmar angles, caudel heel pain, and now has a small indent in the back of the coffin bone. Today was her first time being reset, since starting the products, and she walked off sound. That never happens. |

That being said, sorry you are going through a rough time. Sometimes it seems like one thing after another with horses. I hope you can fix yours or find a new one soon. :) If your horse is really well bred, maybe someone would take him in on trade and try to fix the issues? Good luck, and don't give up. I bet you will find something great really soon. :) |

I think he is pretty well bred, his sire was trained and shown by Tim McQuay and his dam was one of Tim's mares. He is just a very cool horse. I haven't given up on him yet but am aware that he is going to be no more than a trail horse that needs maintenance. Finding the right home or putting him down are definitely on my mind. I'm going to wait until spring and see what happens. Like I said, I don't trust people to do the right thing anymore with taking good care of a horse.
